PURPOSE

The Vice President of Safety defines and articulates a vision for safety and loss prevention, building a compelling case for change and the underlying business case needed to secure senior executive commitment. This role involves recruiting, building, and leading a high-performing team in support of corporate, regional, and divisional business objectives. The Vice President of Safety develops and manages the overall safety program, which includes team member safety and OSHA compliance; driver safety; environmental/EPA compliance; and emergency preparedness. This position ensures effective collaboration across all internal functions and constructive engagement with key external stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Compliance:



  • Develop, implement, and provide requisite training for focused programs and standardized operating procedures (SOPs) designed to create a safe, secure, and compliant work environment.
  • Prevent injuries to team members and third parties, eliminate workplace hazards, minimize vehicle and property damage, mitigate risks to the broader community, and ensure compliance with all applicable safety-related legal, regulatory, and company policy requirements.
  • Ensure the organization is suitably prepared for all emergencies and business operations contingencies.


Management Processes and Infrastructure:



  • Develop, maintain, and deploy the requisite management processes, key performance indicators, metrics, systems, tools, and infrastructure needed to support the overall safety and loss prevention programs.
  • Enable divisional safety programs through centralized information management and support systems.


Compliance Evaluations:



  • Perform periodic comprehensive compliance evaluations to assess the company's compliance status, develop constructive findings and recommendations, and oversee division-level follow through to ensure satisfactory rectification of identified deficiencies.


Cross-Functional Collaboration:



  • Periodically coordinate cross-functional reviews of safety and related compliance programs and policies to ensure appropriate support is provided to corporate, regional, and divisional operations.


Reporting and Analysis:



  • Report regularly on safety and loss prevention-related performance, ensuring timely analysis of key performance indicators and related data.
  • Review key trends to ensure alignment of safety, loss prevention, and quality programs with business objectives.


Contingency Planning:



  • Oversee and ensure that suitable contingency plans are in place, adequately resourced, and prepared to be readily deployed at all locations in the event of any emergency or business interruption.


Team Member Health and Safety:



  • Manage and monitor processes and protocols related to team member health and safety, ensuring compliance with OSHA and other relevant regulations.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct reports include Director(s) of Corporate Safety, Driver Safety Manager, Environmental Compliance and Safety Data Analyst. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training team members; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining team members; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS



  • Education/Training: An undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience in a business, supply chain, or transportation-related management area. Safety or related professional certifications are desirable.
  • Related Experience: 10-15 years of progressively responsible management experience in an operating environment within Safety and Loss Prevention. A demonstrated history of developing and executing creative, proven approaches to Safety and Emergency Preparedness while balancing needs of the business operations.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Strong leadership skills with excellent communication and analytical capabilities.
    • A working knowledge of Department of Transportation and Motor Carrier Act and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulatory requirements at the federal and state levels.
    • Demonstrated ability to interact with, negotiate, and advocate on behalf of the organization with regulatory agencies, external legal counsel, and other third parties.
    • Proven capability to manage and develop a strong, cohesive team by motivating others, inspiring confidence, and rewarding collaboration and communication.
