The School of City and Regional Planning (SCaRP) is a global leader in fostering sustainable, resilient, and just communities, and is consistently ranked within the top-ten planning schools in the United States by Planetizen. Job Summary

The School of City & Regional Planning (https://planning.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a non-tenure track Professor of Practice position in city and regional planning. The expected start date of this position is August 2025. The successful candidate is expected to make significant contributions to advancing the School's academic programs and service to the larger community of city planning and geospatial technology professionals. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students. The Georgia Tech School of City and Regional Planning has a highly accomplished faculty and committed staff. The School's Master of City and Regional Planning degree is ranked as the 6th best in the United States, and the 2nd best "big city" program. The School also offers master's degrees in Geographic Information Science and Technology, Global Development, and Urban Analytics, as well as a PhD in City and Regional Planning. A proposed, new, undergraduate degree in Urban Planning and Spatial Analytics is currently undergoing review.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of lecture-based and studio courses infused with a deep practice-based perspective. The undergraduate Sustainable Cities Studio and graduate Applied Planning Studio are especially important since they serve as students' key capstone experiences for the proposed, new, undergraduate degree and the current Master of City and Regional Planning degree. Other courses that might be taught by the candidate could include these undergraduate courses:

  • Introduction to Urban and Regional Planning,
  • Sustainable Urban Development, and
  • Atlanta Past, Present, and Future,

and these graduate courses:

  • Community Dynamics and Engagement,
  • Introduction to Land Use Planning, and
  • Land Conservation.

The list of courses is illustrative, and the successful candidate may also develop new courses addressing major local and national planning issues of the day.

The Professor of Practice, assisted by the School's excellent staff, will also play a major role in coordinating the School's new, proposed undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning and Spatial Analytics. Those duties will include identifying possible clients for studios, recruiting students, advising students, and helping place students in internships and jobs.

This is a 100% time (40 hours per week) appointment. The workload distribution, including teaching and administrative responsibilities, will vary from semester to semester.

Required Qualifications

  • Have substantial bases of experience, normally at least ten (10) to fifteen (15) years, and a national/international reputation for excellence.
  • Have rich and extensive backgrounds in fields and disciplines related to the school or college of appointment at the Institute.
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have a master's degree in planning or a closely related field, as well as a minimum of 10 years of professional planning experience. The candidate should be able to adopt teaching strategies that draw upon professional practice and support the learning and success of all students by promoting a welcoming educational environment.
