Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

  • A master's degree and at least one arts & sciences degree is preferred
  • Previous advising experience is preferred

Position Summary
An Advisor II is expected to exhibit a thorough knowledge of the University's rules, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to their specific area of advising; a thorough knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a specific area of academic study; effective problem solving and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; and the ability to interpret policies and procedures and communicate these effectively to students and faculty.
Advisors who are promoted to Advisor II have demonstrated a level of competency in executing all of the Advisor I position duties to allow them to use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to address specific needs of the office. An Advisor II is expected to demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team and to plan, carry out, and evaluate project-based work as determined by the needs of the office.
All academic advisors are expected to maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records, and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students. Regular attendance at staff meetings is mandatory.
This position offers an opportunity to create and enhance programming for the benefit of criminal justice majors. An Advisor II often collaborates with other offices, colleges, and organizations campus-wide that serve students.

Duties/Responsibilities

Advises and clears approx. 225 criminal justice (CJ) majors and intended majors for registration every semester.

-Maintains regular and effective communication with students via email, phone, and videoconferencing.

-Updates and Maintains student records for junior/senior CJ majors.

-Provides information about campus resources for student needs.

-Answers questions regarding Double Dawg programs

-Answers questions and directs students to appropriate contacts for other UGA majors, particularly INTL, POLS, PSYC, SOCI, .

-Assists students with academic difficulties, providing resources and contacts as necessary.

-Provides information regarding student appeals of academic requirements.

-Evaluates student requests to overload hours and curriculum exceptions.

-Answers questions regarding career and graduate school opportunities.

-Makes decisions in granting permissions of department

-Meets with prospective students, transfers, and families.

-Maintains up-to-date knowledge of major, university, and college-wide degree requirements.

-Assists with requests regarding transfer credit equivalencies

-Processes applications for admission to the CJ program, includes communicating with applicants about their status.

Duties/Responsibilities

Serves as the Program's representative in all matters pertaining to student advising. This entails attending any necessary meetings with Arts and Sciences and SPIA advising offices, coordinating with academic advisors from affiliate departments concerning distribution of POD's for our major classes, and coordinating with other campus offices regarding student's standing or progress.

Presents advising related information at meetings for applicants, new majors, and prospective interns.

Updates website.

Assists with the identification of needed changes to curriculum for program of study.

Reviews Bulletin and drafts proposed changes.

Assists with annual recognition of seniors
