This position provides direct patient care and support to the SIU Center for Family Medicine patients. Time is spent assisting providers in the clinic with face-to-face patient contact and patient care as needed. This position must work closely with faculty, residents, staff, and patients to ensure an efficient operation.

Examples of Duties

CLINIC/DIRECT PATIENT CARE 100 %
1. This position will assist and support medical providers and other nursing staff during procedure clinics at SIU Family Medicine. 2. Responsible for assisting providers and faculty in various specialty clinics, including but not limited to Access Care clinic, Sleep Medicine, OMT, Gender Equity, Diabetes, and Weight loss clinics. 3. Responsible for setting up the various procedures and assisting residents and faculty at the bedside during the procedures. 4. Responsible for overseeing clean, well-equipped, and supplied exam rooms, assembling clean and sterile packs for special procedures, and maintaining clean and sterile equipment. 5. Responsible for maintaining the procedure rooms in working order, including stocking and reporting inventory needs to nurse leaders. 6. Responsible for post-procedure patient education in collaboration with the medical provider 7. As directed, assist with monitoring medical equipment and devices such as EKG machines, oxygen delivery devices and supplies, AED machines, ultrasound equipment, and other related procedure equipment. 8. Perform EKG tracings as requested by medical providers. 9. Relay results of diagnostic tests and explain medical instructions to patients when indicated by the physician. 10. Assists with the flow and movement of patients in the clinic and communicates with providers and nursing staff to improve the efficiency of clinic workflow. Responsible for keeping the provider exam rooms full. 11. Take patient vital signs, document them in the electronic health record, and communicate findings with medical providers. 12. Completes patient history information as needed. 13. Collects specimens from patients using standard medical procedures and complete requested point of-care testing as ordered by the medical provider. 14. Cleans and sterilizes instruments according to policy; records sterilizer test results and keeps necessary logs. 15. Cleans and disinfects medical instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and facility standards and prepares and sterilizes examination rooms. 16. Responsible for seeing patients in nurse-only clinics under direct physician supervision for protocol driven patient care such as blood sugar checks, blood pressure checks, etc., and documenting same in the electronic health record. 17. Responsible for assisting assigned faculty and residents with electronic health record desktop report and paper reports, Le., labs, x-rays, and consultation results. 18. Assists with coordinating referrals with hospitals and participating specialists, instituting correct preparations for an accurate continuum of care, and documenting same in the electronic health record. 19. Responsible for inventorying medical supplies on the clinic floor and communicating inventory needs to the nurse leaders. 20. Provides guidance and training as needed for new team members.

Qualifications

- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Any one or any combination totaling six (6 months) from the following categories:
- Six (6 months) of work experience in direct patient care in a healthcare setting or equivalent.
- College course work in a related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent.
- 30 semester hours equals six (6 months)
