The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a highly qualified Cytogenetic Technologist for the Cancer Cytogenetics Laboratory. The technologist will be expected to perform all aspects of testing on cytogenetic specimens including sample processing, karyotype analysis, and FISH analysis on both paraffin-embedded tissues and hematological specimens.

Weekend hours may occasionally be necessary.

Responsibilities



  • 55% - Perform chromosome analysis and FISH analysis on hematologic and paraffin-embedded tissue cancer specimens.
  • 30% - Sample processing from set up to slide preparation
  • 10% - Maintain laboratory quality control and assurance measures. Perform equipment maintenance.
  • 5%- Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in a biological science, plus three years of related experience.
  • New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist licensure form the New York Dept of Education OR must be eligible for a NYS issued training certificate, permit or license


Preferred Qualifications



  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • 5+ years of cytogenetic lab experience preferably in a cancer setting.
  • ASCP licensure


Other Requirements



  • Possesses appropriate computer skills to accomplish tasks
  • Motivated to work independently and within a team environment
