Job Description:

The Principal Tax Advisor is responsible for all aspects of tax compliance for a large group of accounts including trusts, estates, foundations, individual retirement accounts, investment partnerships, and individual and gift tax returns. This position will develop and maintain advanced tax planning strategies for our high net worth clients and is expected to serve as a significant resource for other staff members, managers, and attorney/trustees. A hybrid work schedule is available for this position.

Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to the Director, Tax Services

Location: Boston, MA

  • Prepare complex personal returns; including those with private equity and foreign investments.
  • Ability to analyze and anticipate issues and planning opportunities for clients.
  • Prepare all levels of fiduciary income tax returns for trusts. This will include management of an assigned group of accounts.
  • Prepare complex estate fiduciary income tax returns and decedent returns working closely with practice group attorneys and paralegals.
  • Conduct and oversee a review of an assigned group of fiduciary accounts at periodic intervals throughout the year. Review is done on the tax reporting platform. Review will include transaction data and other account information to ensure appropriate tax treatment.
  • Conduct a quarterly review of applicable trust and individual accounts to determine the need for estimated tax payments. Perform calculations, as needed, using appropriate software tools.
  • Collaborate with other staff members and adhere to departmental procedures and timelines to prepare tax reporting for an assigned group of fiduciary accounts.
  • Maintain extremely high accuracy and responsiveness to internal and external clients.
  • Prepare and oversee federal and state income tax returns for an assigned group of individual clients. This will include review and analysis of all relevant data, communication with supervisor or client on items in question, completion of returns for client review and signature, estimated tax planning for subsequent tax period.
  • Participate in internal and external trainings to enhance knowledge of tax laws and regulations applicable to the group's practice.
  • Support and mentor staff members by sharing knowledge of applicable tax law and tax related software.
  • Assist Manager, Tax Department in the development, improvement and implementation of processes and procedures.
  • Lead tax planning and/or research projects related to assigned client accounts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • 8-10 years of relevant tax experience, including 4-5 years of experience in a Senior Tax role.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or other related field required. Master's Degree in Taxation preferred. CPA, EA or other similar industry certification (which will allow for representation of client up to exam level) required.
  • Experience with WK Axcess Tax, Thomson Reuters OneSource Trust Tax and BNA planner or WK Accuplanner preferred.
  • Ability to research, learn and analyze applicable tax law rules and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of IRS Subchapter J laws and related regulations with the ability to apply these concepts to all aspects of the fiduciary income tax practice.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments within a fast paced environment and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and superior attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills with ability to master new systems quickly.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Boston, MA: $121,749 to $180,749

In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
