Job Description and Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Chief Counsel at the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH), the Graduate Legal Assistant (GLA) primarily drafts executive case summaries of BPH parole decisions.

GLAs serve a pivotal role in the decision review process following a parole grant. GLAs review the incarcerated person's commitment offense, criminal history, and activities in prison to produce a succinct summary of these facts. GLAs respond to correspondence for the BPH Legal Division and serve in leadership roles on the GLA team. GLAs also work with BPH attorneys on special projects, training presentations, and research assignments.

The GLA classification affords law school graduates, not yet licensed by the California State Bar, an introduction to the practice of law. The position is a catalyst to an attorney career in public service. The position provides the opportunity to work with a team of other GLAs who are also starting their legal careers.

Working Conditions

Employees are expected to maintain normal and consistent work hours, averaging 40 hours per week. The BPH Legal Division strives for work life balance and these positions include substantial vacation and holiday time.

Remote-Centered employees are expected to maintain a safe and distraction free work environment at the approved alternate work location. Remote-Centered employees agree to adhere to the state telework policy, CDCR's telework policy, and conditions cited in the Telework Agreement (STD 200).

The CDCR Human Resources, Office of Workforce Planning offers a secured access facility with flexible work schedules, convenient transportation options including light rail and pre-tax parking, an on-site ATM and cafe, as well as a variety of nearby shopping locations and eateries including access to a farmers market during the spring and summer months.

5% travel is required

The position is eligible for hybrid telework, in accordance withthe Statewide Telework Policy and will be required to report to the office as needed/required.The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.
