Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist II within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The Research Teaching Specialist II will support research and operational activities of the Precision Prevention of Prostate Cancer (Pre2 CAP) laboratory, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.

The Pre2 CAP laboratory, seeks to (1) discover environmental exposures for prostate cancer, (2) understand and respond to geographic disparities in accessing care, (3) promote equitable prostate cancer prevention, early detection and treatment for all men, and (4) train public health researchers in geospatial analysis. Since its inception, the laboratory has contributed to 37 peer-reviewed articles, reviews and editorials in leading journals, including JAMA Network Open, Environmental Research, and the American Journal of Epidemiology.

We are currently supported by research grants from federal and non-federal sources, including the National Institutes of Health. Further details about the Pre2 CAP laboratory are available at our website.
The Research Teaching Specialist II will manage laboratory operations, including development of standard operating procedures and work plans, assist with research budgets and ancillary documents for studies and grant proposals, and coordinating with Rutgers Information Technology, Office of Research to ensure regulatory compliance.
This position will, under the direction of the Principal Investigator, contribute to research activities, including manuscript preparation, performing epidemiologic, environmental health, and health services research analyses, and support the preparation of grant proposals. Based on their contributions, the Research Teaching Specialist II will be granted opportunities to coauthor or lead certain analyses. They will also contribute to the development of training materials for geospatial data science for cancer researchers at Rutgers and collaborating institutions.

Among the key duties for this position are the following:

  • Contributes to the development of project plans and timelines for all research studies conducted by the Pre2 CAP laboratory. Tracks and reports on progress and supports coordination and oversight of laboratory meetings.
  • Facilitates coordination of stakeholders in community organizations, government agencies, and research administrators at collaborating universities and research institutes.
  • Drafts standard operating procedures documents for data and sample collection, data management and analytic programs under supervision of Principal Investigator and with support from relevant staff.
  • Under the supervision of the PI, contributes to development of budgets for grant proposals through researching vendors, drafting plans for supply chain and logistics for sample collection and tracking, and identifying resources (technology, software) that can enhance activities of the Pre2 CAP laboratory.
  • Supports compliance with regulatory agencies and ethics boards, drafts Institutional Review Board protocols and related compliance documents, supports preparation of Data Use Agreements with data providers, tracks renewal deadlines and oversees correspondence with regulatory partners.
  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, contributes to the design of epidemiologic research studies through contributions on grants and manuscripts.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree in public health or related field, plus two (2) years of related research experience, or a Bachelor's degree plus three (3) years of related research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective oral and communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have experience supporting research activities in a public health setting (including but not restricted to government, non-profit, policy, or academic settings), with demonstrated experience in managing laboratory operations and contributing to scientific activities through data analysis.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with scientific and programmatic writing, such as (but not exclusively) through manuscript preparation as part of a graduate thesis, coauthored or first author publications, contributing author to reports, and oral presentations at scientific meetings.
  • Prior experience in an environmental, cancer epidemiology, or health policy-focused public health group. Coursework in epidemiologic methods and statistics.
  • Proven record of scientific writing as evidenced through experience drafting research protocols, contributing to research articles and grant proposals, and abstracts presented at conferences.
  • Experience with statistical software (R, SAS) is preferred.
