Job Summary

Provides accurate and efficient STAT analysis of Arterial Blood Samples and STAT chemistry test to all critical care and acute care beds. Assures accurate and efficient care and to meet standards outlined by JCAHO and HCFA.

Essential Functions

  • Performs analysis of arterial specimens and STAT chemistry specimens presented to the ABG Lab. Inspects specimen prior to analysis for proper handling. (i.e. labeled, iced if required, no air bubbles present, needle is capped with safety device.) Assures that specimen is matched to requisition before analysis by matching Accession numbers to validate. Assures that all required data is on the requisition (patient name, acct#, ordering physician, date, time, draw site, phleb. code). Puts required information into the analyzer prior to sampling. Identifies sample and mixed completely before presenting specimen to the analyzer. Inspects results to verify they are accurate before returning result.

  • Logs in samples into Mysis system. Transmits results from the analyzer to the computer when analysis is completed. Views each sample after transmission and corrects any errors. After assuring results are accurate before accepting the data. Calls back panic values to therapist, nurse or unit secretary and follows the read back policy. Documents on computer and on requisition as required by policy and procedure.

  • Performs daily, weekly and monthly maintenance as required. Keeps logs / maintenance books up to date. Guarantees that analyzers are functioning properly, maintained, calibrated and that all required QC has been completed and passed. Changes cartridges when needed and assures that PVP is ran. Documents all QC results and any action taken to correct results out of the acceptable range. Identifies problems with operation of instruments and repairs when possible. Documents corrective actions. Contacts and communicates with service representative when necessary.

  • At the end of each shift, reviews report for outstanding specimens or missing information. Completes any paperwork as required such as ABG shutdown sheets, K-15 forms, QA-4 forms, electrical fluctuations. Guarantee that all Cartridges/PVP/CVP/QC / Reagents / etc. are dated and stored according to manufactures recommendation. Notifies manager when proficiency survey arrives, mark date and time arrived and refrigerate. Keeps lab neat and clean at all times and assures that safety, electrical and temperature regulations are met. Notifies manager when running low on supplies, cartridges, QC, etc.

  • Trains new employees as needed. Trains RCPs to operate the instruments and completes the RCP checkoff. Performs annual competency checkoffs for RCP's. Performs CQI as directed by the manager and provides constant feedback and suggestions for improvement of operations

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibility

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - High School diploma or equivalent

  • Experience - No experience required. Science background preferred
