Design Technician I Engineering

Summary:

Read plans, completes CAD work and pointing loads to engineer lumber for lumber yards.

Provide working drawings for field installation of engineered wood products. Work under local design manager, learning all aspects of engineering requirements for wood truss component products.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Collaborate with outside sales personnel and customers to finish accurately completed, safe and quality structures.

Design of engineered wood products.

Generate placement plans, identifying the location of the individual designs. Identify the slope or depth, span and spacing.

Develop designs in accordance to applicable building codes including live loads, dead loads, concentrated loads, wind speeds and seismic reactions.

Calculate deflection ratios and/or maximum deflection for live and total loads. State lumber sizes, species, and grade for each individual member.

List connection requirements for truss to truss, ply to ply, and truss to girder.

Determine forces to aid building designer in size, connections and anchorage of permanent continuous lateral bracing.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience: Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.



Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or

members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.



Math Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.



Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.



Computer Skills:

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations: Must complete training and be certified by manufacturer, CAD and design school.



Other Skills and Abilities:

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are necessary.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to handle multiple priorities are essential. The ability to collaborate with salespeople and other designers in a close-knit setting is required.


Other Qualifications:

Two years of Primecad experience required.

Must have working knowledge of blueprints and understand loads associated with structures. Must possess practical knowledge of wood frame construction.

CAD experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is subject to quiet conditions, such as those in a library or private office.
