Job Summary

We are seeking a Community Manager who is equity-minded and demonstrates a sensitivity to the range of identities and diverse backgrounds present in our community. The candidate should be highly organized and able to manage multiple groups within an organization. The candidate should have or be capable of learning strong research and communications skills, a collaborative mindset, and change management experience. They should have or be capable of a moderate-to-high degree of personal initiative, require minimal supervision, and be able to adjust to an organization's changing needs. Most of all, the candidate must have high zeal for this role and a willingness to learn.

The Community Manager is a dynamic, hands-on position that is responsible for supporting all related aspects of community engagement and outreach within our organization, with a significant focus on enriching diversity and inclusion in our community.

The Community Manager plays a vital role in the strategic and operations management of our existing trainee groups. This includes planning, implementation, and coordination of new and existing initiatives to support each groups' priorities, and ensuring that they are able to do their best work. The Community Manager's responsibilities include:

  • Works closely with group leaders and HR/admin to develop and support diversity, equity, and wellness initiatives across ImmunoX and UCSF.
  • Build strong ties to our local community, including underserved high schools, colleges, and the local Bay Area community, to increase outreach and recruiting efforts
  • Manages complex timetables successfully in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. This includes leading post-event retrospectives and examining the efficacy of outreach events based on internally set metrics and progress.
  • Participates in financial and logistical planning of all yearly and special events. This includes monitoring and reviewing budgets and expenses.
  • Designs and maintains best practices and other resources, making sure the groups' assets are discoverable, curated, and current.

The Community Manager also administratively supports the broader faculty oversight committee (Membership & Community Committee). In addition to management of our diversity groups, the Community Manager responsibilities include:
  • Organizes committee meetings, including scheduling, planning agendas, creating slides, and preparing minutes.
  • Oversees our community fund, including managing yearly funded initiatives and ensuring community participation in those initiatives.
  • Maintains our membership pipeline and onboarding process, and develops new vehicles of engagement.
  • Manages and crafts content for our website, social media feeds, and other forms of communications.
  • Leads public engagement and outreach initiatives.
  • Plans and organizes socials, networking, and other special events.

The Community Manager directly reports to the ImmunoX Chief Strategy Officer and acts as a bridge between faculty and trainee leadership groups.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

The Bakar ImmunoX Initiative is an ambitious, first-in-class program at UCSF that uses social engineering, state-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure, and a unique data-sharing model to support a large community of researchers and clinicians as they seek to harness immunology to improve human health. By restructuring traditional research, we create opportunities for cross-fertilization of ideas, discoveries, and insights.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Effective communicator
  • Strong interpersonal skills, relationship-building, and collaborative mindset across diverse groups
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Event planning and coordination experience
  • Strong interest and/or experience in DEI advocacy and developing/executing DEI programs

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams
  • Program management experience
  • Comfortable managing through ambiguity to define clear roadmaps, recommendations, plans, and processes
