Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Bronco One Stop is a centralized space for students to access common student services to strengthen their ability to navigate Fayetteville State University. The goal of Bronco One Stop is to enhance the student experience with the application process, academic records, financial aid, making payments, speaking with an advisor to register for classes, gaining assistance with degree planning, receiving academic support, and navigating university resources.
Fayetteville State University's Advising Center's mission is to promote student success by empowering students to achieve their academic and career aspirations. The Center delivers high-quality services by providing support with educational planning, course selection, resource awareness, and success strategies.

  • Participate in special programs such as new student orientation, open house, and majors fair.
  • Serve as a backup in the Bronco One Stop central services during peak times.
  • Serve on committees as appropriate and as appointed by the supervisor.

Description of Work Continued:
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Retention Counselor is a dual role that aids students in developing the knowledge, skills, and personal accountability needed to explore academic, co-curricular, and career options while evaluating and tracking progress toward graduation. This role focuses on addressing advising, registration, and enrollment needs to increase retention and graduation rates.

This position has been designated as Time - Limited, continuation of position is contingent upon the continuing availability of non-state funds.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
Hold an earned graduate degree in higher education or other education related area. Must have experience working with student success programs in a higher education setting.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
Knowledge:

  • Best practices in coaching/advising.
  • Knowledge of student success platforms (e.g., Banner, Microsoft Outlook, Canvas).
  • Understanding of higher education practices that enhance student academic skills.


Skills:

  • Communication skills to explain, write, advocate for, and report on program needs and
  • academic outcomes.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Proficiency in computers, student success technology, Microsoft Office, and TEAMS.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks while
  • multitasking and managing them efficiently

Abilities:

  • Ability to respond effectively to unexpected events and adjust plans as needed.
  • Listen and analyze academic needs, generate reports on academic progression, and navigate
  • student records.
  • Provide basic process explanations and direct students to appropriate resources.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Time management skills and the ability to work calmly under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other offices.
  • Comprehension and adherence to federal and university student confidentiality requirements.
  • A willingness to work occasionally after 5:00 pm and on weekends, especially during peak times.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of college students.
Three to five years experience advising first-year students, particularly exploratory/undecided students.
One to two years experience in advising and programming for special populations.
Proficiency with student success management systems such as EAB Navigate, Ellucian Banner
Student, Canvas Learning Management System, and Degree Works.
At least two years of experience working with student populations as an advisor, peer
coach/leader, resident assistant, or tutor.
