Senior Scientist II (Analytical Chemistry)

SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day activities and use of industry-leading chromatography tools to separate, purify, and characterize small molecule compounds for research and development projects. The successful candidate will also be responsible for management of external vendors and service providers for lab instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, technical/process development to optimize analytical workflow efficiency and throughput.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Highly skilled in application of state-of-the-art chromatographic analytical and separation methods for small molecule characterization: HPLC/UPLC, LC-MS, SFC, UV-Vis/Spectroscopy, etc.

  • Manage, prioritize and complete analytical and separation work with related chromatographic methods for drug substances with complex matrices.

  • Utilize high throughput techniques for compound library and array purifications with LCMS and automated robotics.

  • Ensure best practices for analysis and mid-scale-up purification of small molecule drug samples from medicinal chemistry synthesis.

  • Coordinate the maintenance of analytical instrumentation service tasks with theFacilities team and external vendors.

  • Contribute effectively towards strategic and tactical development of analytical chemistry planning with key emphasis on technical aspects and development.

  • Operate independently to achieve goals and objectives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry or a related field and a minimum of two years of related experience; or,

  • MS in analytical chemistry or related discipline and a minimum of seven years of chromatography experience related to drug discovery; or,

  • BS in analytical chemistry or related discipline and a minimum of nine years of chromatography experience related to drug discovery; or,

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience/The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation including HPLC, LCMS.

  • Hands-on experience with automation tasks on liquid handling processes.

  • Experience using chromatography in small molecule drug discovery setting within pharmaceutical industry.

  • Experience developing analytical methods, specifically HPLC and SFC methods, for testing small molecule and drug products.

  • Experience with purification and characterization of small molecule compounds on a milligram to gram scale.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong practical and technical knowledge of small molecule separation by modern chromatographic techniques such as Reverse Phase LC/UPLC, LCMS and SFC.

  • Expert knowledge of automatic liquid handler/Robotics and related data processing software

  • Knowledge of NMR spectroscopy is a plus.

  • Good interpersonal skills, flexibility in a fast-paced environment and ability to work well within a team environment are essential skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Discovery/Alameda:

  • Environment: primarily working in laboratories or in office

  • Travel as required (to be less than 10%)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across severalU.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this positionis $125,000 - $176,500 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate's geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors. In addition to the base salary, as part of our Total Rewards program, Exelixis offers comprehensive employee benefits package, including a 401k plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts. Employees are also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, or if field sales staff, a sales-based incentive plan. Exelixis also offers employees the opportunity to purchase company stock, and receive long-term incentives, 15 accrued vacation days in their first year, 17 paid holidays including a company-wide winter shutdown in December, and up to 10 sick days throughout the calendar year.
