Job Summary
The Registered Nurse, Procedural possesses advanced education in administering patient sedation and/or monitoring of patient post sedation or anesthesia. The Registered Nurse, Procedural utilizes extensive patient assessment skills, collaborates with all healthcare team members to ensure the most optimal patient outcome. Performs all activities at an expanded level of nursing practice executed within the context of the nursing process. Maintains education in ACLS and/or Sedation allowing them to safely care for patients that are "at risk" due to sedation/anesthesia and procedure. If working with Pediatric population, will also obtain PALS training. If working in the Intra-op area the Registered Nurse, Procedural maintains a high level of expertise in the cases they assist with. The Registered Nurse, Procedural perioperative nurse is an RN who plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates nursing care for patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during operative or other invasive procedures.
Essential Functions
  • Assesses, monitors, develops and maintains individualized patient plan of care with the patient and consistent with patient/family changing needs, and goals and reflecting the full scope of nursing practice. Delivers care in a manner that is culturally sensitive and preserves patient autonomy, dignity and rights. Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients. Documents patient care accurately and acts as a patient/family advocate.
  • Initiates patient discharge planning at initial patient contact and facilitates a smooth transition to the next point of service. Ensures that the required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Provides evidence-based patient care consistent with plan and guidelines of care, physician's orders and in compliance with health system policies, procedures and American Nurses Association (ANA)/regulatory standards. Communicates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care.
  • Evaluates patients and families' educational needs and develops and implements appropriate teaching strategies or makes appropriate referrals.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.
  • Articulates the professional nursing role to the patient, family and health team members. Assumes an autonomous leadership role and delegates appropriately to support employees to facilitate safe, quality care in a timely, cost-effective manner.
  • Pre and Post-procedurally/operatively, actively and independently cares for the patient. Able to provide sedation under the direction of a physician after attending/completing Sedation class and ACLS.
Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor's Degree in Nursing must be obtained within 7 years for those who start in this RN role on or after January 1, 2013 (SHWM); within 7 years for those who start in this RN role on or after January 1, 2017 (Gerber, Pennock, Ludington); within 7 years for those who start in this RN role on or after February 22, 2016 (Reed City, Big Rapids); within 7 years for those who start in this RN role between February 1, 2013 and December 31, 2016 (United and Kelsey)
  • Required Associate's Degree Nursing
  • Successful completion of a competency-based orientation Required
  • 2 years of relevant experience in a perioperative nursing department (SH Grand Rapids Required) Preferred
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required
  • CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required
  • Ideal candidate will be an RN possessing Cardiology or ICU or Emergency Department experience
