Requisition Id14118

Overview:

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation's biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 7,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL's broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

Purpose:

The Research Application Development Group (RAD) within the Manufacturing Science Division in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is currently accepting applications for an R&D Professional.

The Research Application Development (RAD) Group provides software expertise in support of numerous initiatives contained under the umbrella of Industry 4.0, Buildings and Technology, and Transportation. This expertise spans a wide array of computer science and software development disciplines including cyber-security, full stack web development, path planning, UI/UX, and visualization to name a few. The RAD Group brings this expertise to bear in support of existing research as well as the development of novel approaches in a timely and quality manner by utilizing modern software development techniques.

As an R&D Professional focusing on simulation and visualization, you will contribute to developing solutions that improve additive manufacturing processes. This role emphasizes leveraging modeling and simulation for enhancing path planning approaches and collaborating with experts in in-situ sensing and robotic control to integrate relevant data. These efforts will naturally require visualization and dissemination to interested users. You must be a highly motivated, self-starter who is comfortable working as part of a team and must demonstrate a strong focus and excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop numerical algorithms to enable the solution of fundamental problems in additive manufacturing, supporting a range of processes including polymer, powder, and metal-based systems of multiple types.
  • Construct and validate mathematical models of physical phenomena, ensuring their accuracy through analytical and numerical techniques.
  • Implement algorithms as a part of a collaborative team of research application software engineers, computer scientists, and engineers.
  • Collaborate with sensor specialists and other experts to integrate sensory data into simulations.
  • Work with researchers and project sponsors as needed to gather requirements, present your work, and elicit feedback.
  • Disseminate results in peer reviewed journals, articles, technical reports, white papers, presentations, and seminars.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Computational Science, Data Science, or equivalent plus four years of relevant experience; or MS degree plus two years of relevant experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in developing and implementing numerical algorithms for simulations.
  • Proficient with multiple languages, IDEs, and environments including C++, MATLAB, Windows/Linux, and Python.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and leadership.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Computational Science, Data Science, or equivalent with a focus on simulation.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing and parallel processing.
  • Familiarity with Qt.
  • Experience in multiple computer science disciplines including but not limited to path planning, visualization, computational geometry, and optimization algorithms.
  • Previous experience with additive manufacturing software development with an understanding of the additive manufacturing process and its challenges.
  • Knowledge of modern software processes, systems, and tools such as physics- and data-driven simulation, computational evaluation of bespoke simulation models, Windows/Linux, C++, Python, MATLAB is required. Experience with slicing and path pathing development for additive manufacturing is preferred.
