Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC) is an accredited on-campus mental health facility dedicated to supporting the well-being of UT Austin students. CMHC offers a range of services, including assessment and referral, group and individual counseling, psychiatry and well-being services.

University Health Services (UHS) is an accredited on-campus medical facility dedicated to addressing the diverse healthcare needs of UT Austin students. UHS provides comprehensive services, including general medical care, public health education and specialty clinics.

The Longhorn Wellness Center is the health promotion unit servicing University Health Services and Counseling and Mental Health Center. Staff focuses on educating students about priority college health issues by hosting workshops and events, creating new tools, and collaborating with the campus community to enhance overall well-being.

Purpose

This positions a variety of clinical, assessment, and referral services to students at the University of Texas Counseling and Mental Health Center. Triage clients by conducting brief clinical assessments to determine level of care and disposition. Intervene with students in crisis and provide support, resources, and information.

Essential Functions:

Triage clients by conducting brief clinical assessments to determine level of care and disposition. Intervene with students in crisis and providing support, resources, and information.

  • Conduct initial assessments of students' presenting concerns.

  • Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation of all service contacts as required by center policies and procedures.

  • Develop and implement a good blend of programmatic interventions which address the psycho-social mental health needs of students as applicable

Provide clinical consultation to others on an as-needed basis and seeks consultation when appropriate. Provide urgent care services as necessary to students.

  • Works collaboratively and cooperatively with other mental health professionals on CMHC's multidisciplinary staff and other university departments and organizations

  • Develops linkages with key contacts of the designated population or issue for the purpose of developing and implementing programmatic interventions which generate substantial participation by students.

Reviews client record to determine the progress, effectiveness, and appropriateness of treatment services offered. Maintains current, accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with state and federal law, professional ethics, and Counseling and Mental Health Center, CMHC, policies. Coordinates referrals between CMHC and university or community service providers.

Assist the Program Director for Access and Referral Services in implementing the CMHC triage system and other clinical services.

Other required activities

  • Attend and participate in departmental and division meetings and staff development programs as assigned.

  • Participates in the prevention and outreach team meetings by contributing new ideas, engaging in problem solving and seeking better ways to impact the mental health needs of students.

  • Comply with all CMHC and UT policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Provision of training activities such as individual supervision, preceptorships, apprenticeships, co-leading and supervising therapy groups, and leading trainee seminars.

  • Provides individual supervision of interns, practicum students, or psychiatric residents.

  • Provides individual supervision of group co-leaders.

  • Supervises interns' supervision of practicum students.

  • Co-leads training seminars.

  • Offers and supervises preceptorships and apprenticeships for interns.

  • Participates on training-related committees.

  • Participates in training activities during the orientation period.

  • Timely signature on clinical documentation and communication with supervisor of relevant issues.

Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

License Requirement

Professional Counselor:

  • Licensed to practice independently as a professional counselor in Texas

  • Or if licensed in another state, must be able to obtain license to practice independently in Texas within one year

Clinical Social Work:

  • Licensed to practice independently as a Clinical Social Worker in Texas

  • Or if licensed in another state, must be able to obtain license to practice independently in Texas within one year

Educational Requirements

Professional Counseling:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work or other degree which meets eligibility requirement in Texas for licensure and licensed as a Professional Counselor or the equivalent from another state must be able to obtain licensure in Texas within one year if licensed in another state. LPCi will not be considered.

  • Two years post masters clinical experience in college or university counseling center or other relevant clinical setting.

Clinical Social Work:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work or other degree which meets eligibility requirement in Texas for licensure and licensed as a Clinical Social Worker or the equivalent from another state must be able to obtain licensure in Texas within one year if licensed in another state.

  • Two years post masters clinical experience in college or university counseling center or other relevant clinical setting.

Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience in high demand outpatient or inpatient mental health setting.

  • Demonstrated experience in providing brief individual therapy, crisis intervention, group therapy, care coordination, and case management.

  • Experience providing culturally competent treatment to a diverse client population.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and communication skills.

  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience in working with serious mental illness.

  • At least 3 years of significant experience in providing short-term individual counseling and crisis intervention services to a culturally diverse population.

  • At least 3 years of demonstrated experience in high demand outpatient or inpatient mental health settings.

  • At least 3 years of experience providing crisis intervention, triage, care coordination, and brief therapy to young adults and/or college students.

  • Experience working in a college/university counseling center or community-based mental health setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with campus personnel, such as professionals in academic affairs and other student services providers or ability to work effectively with non-mental health professional colleagues.

  • Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health providers.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a large system, and to participate and collaborate effectively in a large mental health services agency.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a flexible yet highly organized working style.

  • Licensed as an LCSW/LPC for a minimum of two years.

Salary Range
  • Licensed Professional Counselor - $60,420 + depending on qualifications

  • Clinical Social Worker - $60,420 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Work around standard office conditions

  • This position is onsite and not eligible for remote work at this time.
