Job Description

SEMCO - Lead Public Affairs
Be the Voice of SEMCO Energy as you engage with state and local governments, and key business and trade organizations. Craft and drive dynamic public policy strategies that shape legislative initiatives at both state and local levels. Collaborate with influential business coalitions to steer public policy outcomes in favor of SEMCO Energy. Lead advocacy efforts that propel the company's mission forward and make a tangible impact in the community.

You Will:

  • Conduct legislative and policy analysis to determine impact on the company and develops public policy strategies

  • Engage policy makers to discuss proposed policy initiatives and changes to educate them on the impact to SEMCO and its customers

  • Engage internal and external stakeholders to discuss potential policy and legislative changes or initiatives to determine the impact on SEMCO and its customers and to develop company positions on proposed changes or initiatives

  • Develop advocacy strategies and coordinates the day-to-day execution of approved strategies before local legislative and executive branch audiences

  • Business and trade organizations, and the general public to influence desired business outcomes

  • Establish and maintains key state and local public policy and business relationships for the Company

  • Develop strategies which may lead to new business opportunities for SEMCO Energy business units

  • Participate in State, Federal and AGA workgroups and collaboratives representing SEMCO's interests, relaying updates and outcomes to interested parties within the Company

  • Act as point person on policy-focused proposals, requests for information, requests for comment, constituent service inquiries, and grant applications for State and Federal agencies as well as other policy-related projects as assigned

  • Write and edit communication pieces for internal and external outlets to support corporate communications related to policy or legislative changes or initiatives

  • Provide policy analyses and action recommendations to senior company officials and executives

  • Negotiate external public affairs vendor agreements and manages external contract lobbyists

  • Files regular reports internally and reports externally as required by law

You Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree Political Science, Business Administration or related field required

  • Master's Degree preferred

  • 7+ Years experience in state and community relations required

  • Knowledge of gas distribution operations preferred

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of federal, state, and local legislative processes

  • Ability to work flexible hours if necessary to meet project and community representation requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate successfully with state and community leaders to achieve desired business outcomes

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate multiple scenarios and implement effective solutions to broadly defined business problems

  • Demonstrated ability to present complex ideas logically and concisely to diverse audiences at all organizational levels both verbally and in writing

  • Demonstrated high level of business acumen and knowledge of business strategy, process and energy industry policy issues

  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors, and peers

  • Demonstrated ability to influence/winning support of government personnel and local and regional business representatives.

We offer a competitive salary range of $116,500 to $160,375 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
