The Department provides contemporary law enforcement services, including patrol, traffic, investigations, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, and site security services to a daily population of more than 70,000 people at the University's Irvine campus and the UCI Medical Centers in Orange and Irvine. Future operational responsibilities will include UCI's Community Health Network hospitals in Los Alamitos, Fountain Valley, Placentia, and Lakewood.
The Department employs about 50 sworn police officers, 64 professional staff, and 40 students who provide public safety services at the Irvine campus and the UCI Health Medical Centers located in the cities of Orange and Irvine. Sergeants are assigned to Watch Commander roles, Investigations, Special Events and Systemwide Response Teams (SRT). They manage a shift or a work unit consisting of sworn and professional staff. Assignments may include working at the Irvine or Orange campuses, with future operations planned at UCI's Community Network Hospital locations.
Your Role on the Team
Reports through the Police Chain of Command. Provides direct supervision of one or more teams of police officers or other assigned personnel. The police department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at UCI Health locations and UC Irvine. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Sets priorities and supervises workflow.

(Hourly) * POST Certificate pay - Management 10% or Supervisor 12% * Education Pay- Associate $46.15/pay period, Bachelors $92.31/pay period, Master's $138.46/ pay period * Bilingual Pay- $75/ pay period * Uniform & Fitness Allowance- $2,000 Required:
- Solid experience performing all aspects of police officer functions.
- Solid knowledge of laws, case decisions and policies regarding law enforcement functions.
- Solid ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing.
- Solid ability to take decisive action based upon sound judgment.
- Solid ability to supervise and train staff in the relevant and necessary aspects of their duties.
- Solid ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology.
- Solid knowledge of use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment or tools.
- Ability to work rotating shifts in all weather conditions and during extended periods of disaster or civil disorder.
- Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and possess a valid California Driver's License.
- Solid ability to credibly represent the police department in an official capacity.
- Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English, using correct grammer, spelling and punctuation.
- Ability to use precise phrases and write in a logical, concise, and chronological manner.
- High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training
- Bachelor's degree or higher eduation from an accredited higher education institution.
- Possess a valid California Driver's License
- Is at least 21 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States (GC 1031.4 & GC 1029)
- Must possess a California POST Supervisory certificate or obtain a Supervisory Certificated within 30 months of hire.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation, medical and psychological examinations and any other training or prerequisites as required by regulation, law or policy.
- No felony conviction or other legal restrictions on the ability to carry firearms or to perform other work responsibilities (GC 1029).
- Minimum of five years full-time experience as a sworn peace officer. Must possess a valid California POST Advanced Certificate and meet the eligibility requirements
Preferred:
- Solid knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions.
- Solid knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends as applied within the University environment.
- Possession of POST ICI certificate.
- Possession of POST Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) certificate
Special Conditions:
- Must attend and complete the California POST Supervisors course within the first year of employment.
- Must attend and complete the California POST Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) course within the first three years of employment.
- Must complete all California POST requirements for employment as a police officer including polygraph, background investigation, medical and psychological examinations.
- Must be currently employed or have been employed within the last two years (at the time of application) as a police officer at a California law enforcement agency that falls within Penal Code sections 830.1 (a-c) or 830.2 (a-c).

The top ten candidates or those who receive a score of 70% or higher on the written examination, whichever group is greater, will be invited to participate in the subsequent promotional examination components.
