Nuc Med Technologist I

Summary:
Under general supervision of the Manager and Lead Technologist of Nuclear Medicine and in accordance with established policies and procedures performs a variety of technical tasks designed to facilitate Nuclear Medicine procedures by which physicians may diagnosis and treat illness and injuries. Calculates correct dosage of radiopharmaceuticals and administers to the patient. Performs imaging scans using gamma cameras SPECT/CT cameras and PET/CT cameras. Utilizes ancillary equipment required to perform diagnostic procedures. All essential functions performed in the position reflect age specific needs of the geriatric adult and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and Rhode Island Hospital mission vision and values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

Responsibilities:
Explains the nature of each test procedure to patient to allay fears and anxieties. Assists patient into assuming the correct anatomical position for display of body areas to be studied.

Calculates and administers correct dosages of radiopharmaceuticals and administers by intravenous or intra-muscular injection ingestion or inhalation of radioactive gases in order to produce the desired concentration of isotopes in the specific organ system.

Operates gamma cameras and scanners to produce diagnostic images of organ systems targeted by the radiopharmaceutical administered. Uses proper imaging and processing technique according to knowledge of standard procedures to ensure that examination results are desired quality.

If the role requires operating SPECT/CT or P.E.T./CT equipment to produce diagnostic images the employee must be licensed for the practice of Computed Tomography or Hybrid Imaging in the State of Rhode Island.

Calibrates and conducts quality control checks on all equipment used within the department.

Performs administrative and clerical tasks with Nuclear Medicine such as preparing patient charts scheduling tests recording data or radiopharmaceuticals and calibration tests and completing patient records in PACs and Lifechart.

Participates in Nuclear Medicine training program by demonstrating and observing clinical techniques to students.

Maintains order and cleanliness of examination and laboratories.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Completion of accredited training program in Nuclear Medicine Technology is required.

If the role requires operating SPECT/CT or P.E.T./CT equipment to produce diagnostic images the employee must be licensed for the practice of Computed Tomography or Hybrid Imaging in the State of Rhode Island.

Registry by at least one of the following bodies:

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists * Nuclear Medicine.

Nuclear Medicine Technologists* Certification Board.

Must hold a current CPR certification from AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers

The interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with patients in order to allay their fears and anxieties departmental staff physicians and others.

The analytical ability to calculate and prepare radiopharmaceutical isotopes according to the standard procedure required by the test given.

The ability to operate all modern Nuclear Medicine equipment within the department.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

One to three months progressively more responsible job related experience is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Regularly exposed to radioactive materials but there is little chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed.

Works in Nuclear Medicine Department where there is little discomfort due to noise and dust but some discomfort due to heat from testing equipment.

Work requires considerable amounts of walking and standing.

The physical ability to lift and/or position patients.
