Job Summary

Under supervision, assist with research examining the impacts of regenerative agriculture ground cover on managed and native pollinators in almond orchards in Northern California. Duties are primarily focused on field visual surveys of bees and flowering plants. This position will be based in Davis, CA and will involve multiple field days per week with some overnight stays at field housing/ hotels.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license to drive a campus vehicle.
  • High school diploma/GED and/or relevant experience.
  • Introductory coursework in sciences (e.g. biology, environmental science, entomology, botany).
  • Experience performing independent work after training.
  • Experience in field work with surveys, monitoring with plants or insects.
  • Ability to move on uneven ground in working agricultural orchards that may involve navigating between orchard trees with field equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with sampling plants and animals in field settings.
  • Experience with basic plant identification.
  • Experience with basic insect identification.
  • Ability to carry out sustained work using in the field for 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to carry equipment of 30-40 lbs.

Department Overview

The Williams Lab at University of California Davis conducts research that addresses basic questions about bee ecology, evolution, and behavior. We explore the intricacies of pollinator-floral interactions from animal and plant perspectives. We seek to understand the persistence of pollinator populations, pollinator and plant communities, and pollination in the context of global change.

The Williams lab is seeking full time, limited duration lab/ field assistants. We are working on a project examining effects of regenerative management of almond orchards on bees and other pollinators in California.
