The Respiratory Therapy Technician provides respiratory therapy under medical direction, in the treatment, management, control, and diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with deficiencies of the cardiopulmonary system.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Respiratory Therapy Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Able to retrieve orders from the pulmonologist: Independently retrieves orders from the pulmonologist and initiates new assignments without supervision.
2. Assembles and enters patient demographics: Independently assembles patient demographics and enters into the PFT machine.
3. Cares for patients requiring respiratory treatments: Demonstrates proficiency in performing a patient assessment, delivering prescribed therapy, and assessing treatment outcomes.
4. Familiar with all departmental policies and procedures.
5. Complies with Annual PPD testing.
6. Medications are given as ordered: States given effects, side effects and usual doses for neonatal, infant, pediatric and adult patients. Demonstrates ability to administer drugs without medical errors. Uses the computerized medication dispensing system appropriately.
7. Performs Pulmonary Function Tests: Demonstrates proficiency in operations, and performs patient testing utilizing the Medtronics Hawk system.
8. Provides patient/family education based on patient health needs: Demonstrates ability to identify educational needs of the patient and family then initiates a teaching program and schedule to achieve the educational goals.
9. Uses the Soarian computer system for retrieval of patient information and billing: Accurate billing is performed 90% of the time.
10. Utilizes standard/ universal precautions: Consistently uses protective equipment (PPE)s when appropriate.
11. Verifies all physician orders: Consistently verifies all physician orders in the patient chart before initiating therapy.
12. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
13. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. A minimum of one (1) year of experience working within a respiratory environment in an acute care or hospital facility.
3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
4. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification within 12 months of entering position.
2. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification within 12 months of entering position.
3. Neonatal Resuscitation Program within 12 months of entering position.
4. Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification within 12 months of entering position.

Re-certifies as required.
