Overview:

We are seeking an aquatic ecologist technician who will focus on field-oriented ecology support for a variety of studies being conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position resides in the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Group in the Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems Section, Environmental Sciences Division, Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate at ORNL.

As part of our team, you will perform field studies as well as laboratory work, including collecting biological and water quality samples, sample processing, data analysis, and report writing.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Participate in small field sampling crews in data collection in aquatic systems ranging from small streams to large reservoirs.
  • Measuring various physiological and biochemical parameters in biota, including fish.
  • Processing biota, sediment, and water samples for contaminant analysis.
  • Experimentation with and care of fish in the laboratory.
  • Experience with identifying fish species and managing ichthyological collections.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BSdegree in aquatic ecology, fisheries, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with biota identification (including fish) and chemical and hydrologic sampling.
  • Technical field experience.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues.
  • Carry out technical duties with safety as the priority.
  • Good communication skills in English, both oral and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSdegree in aquatic ecology, fisheries, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Field hydrological or analytical/chemical instrument skills are desirable.
  • Experience with trailering and operating various types of boats for inland fisheries work is desirable.
  • Experience with field data collection around hydroelectric and thermoelectric power plants is a plus.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

This is a temporary assignment of 18 months with potential for extension.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions such as carrying buckets of water or heavy backpacks, walking in streams, and working in hot and cold weather conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
