About the Department |
The mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine (
CVM) and NC State VeterinaryHospital (VH) is to enhance animal and human health and well-being through the education and advanced training of veterinarians and provide leadership in veterinarycare and outreach through interdisciplinary partnerships. The Teaching Animal Unit (
TAU) is a dynamic teaching institution for veterinary students in all four years of the veterinary curriculum that includes experiences with swine, poultry, sheep, goats, horses, and beef/dairy cattle.
The
TAU aims to provide realistic opportunities for veterinary students to learn the relationship between husbandry, production management, economics, and veterinary medicine. This live animal farming enterprise strives to function as compatible with a financially viable agricultural enterprise by emphasizing current best management practices for an environmentally enriched, animal welfare-friendly operation. This student exposure is accomplished annually by providing live animal educational training for more than 150 teaching laboratories. |
Essential Job Duties |
This position is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of personnel within the
TAU. The position reports directly to the Director of Animal Resources at the
CVM and the Primary Site Veterinarian (
PSV) and will supervise research technicians, specialists, and student workers.
General duties include but are not limited to:
- Development and adherence to all unit standard operating procedures related to proper animal care of the species housed at the TAU
- Assurance of proper personnel training in all aspects of general safety and proper animal handling; and adherence to the pertinent animal care standards as set forth by AALAC, USDA, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
- Supervisors communicate directly with research and teaching groups to ensure full husbandry and space support for ongoing teaching and research within the CVM.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Experience in agricultural animal care and husbandry
- Knowledge of animal welfare regulations and standards (Animal Welfare Act and the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals)
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to maintain an electronic record-keeping system
- Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and direct reports

Preferred Qualifications |
- Ruminant or dairy farm experience is a plus.
LATG AALAS certification or RVT.
