Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE
The Jury Clerk Assistant supports the efficient operation of the jury selection and performs tasks related to all aspects of jury management. Work is performed in accordance with applicable Pennsylvania law and regulations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports directly to the Court Administrator and/or Associate Court Administrator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position is not responsible for the supervision of other employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Develops, maintains, and updates master list of jurors through a juror selection database via specialized software.

Assists Jury Clerk in listing cases and determining number of jurors needed, and size of jury to be called, as needed.

Notifies prospective jurors of service.

Processes returned juror questionnaires in preparation for appearance.

Orients jurors to Court and trial procedures, and explains the responsibilities and duties of a juror.

Answers juror questions regarding hours, pay, results of being chosen for jury service, and any other concerns.

May assist the Jury Clerk in preparing state and local billing reports and processing payments to jurors, as needed.

Reviews and approves requests for postponement of service, or requests for being excused from jury duty.

Dismisses juror panels that are no longer needed.

Assists Jury Clerk with compiling statistical information regarding jury utilization and preparation of reports, as needed.

Assists Jury Clerk with compiling juror lists for each day of Court and distributing list to judges, attorneys, or related staff, as needed.

Follows up with people who do not appear for jury duty.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE-
Completion of a high school, or general equivalency diploma; AND

At least six (6) months of satisfactory full-time professional experience in a legal, governmental, or judicial organization which has included responsibility for scheduling, organizing, or coordinating jury management activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of Court laws, regulations, and guidelines governing all elements of jury management.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques, and operating practices commonly employed in office management work.

Skill and ability in determining priorities, balancing competing demands, and organization of jurors.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the Judiciary, employees, officials, and the public.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to maintain accurate records and compile reports from them.

Ability to operate a personal computer to enter information into, and secure information from, established data processing, spreadsheet, word processing, database, and graphics programs.

Must possess strong organizational skills and be able to work independently.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Telephone, personal computer (including word processing and spreadsheet software), calculator, writing implements, fax machine, copy machine, and paper shredder.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds.
