Recruitment/Posting Title Postdoctoral Associate
Department SAS - Physics & Astronomy
Salary Commensurate With Experience
Posting Summary
The Department of Physics and Astronomy and Rutgers University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to collaborate with Prof. John P. Hughes on studies of clusters of galaxies in the era of mm-band surveys.
The successful candidate will work on the identification and follow-up of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect ( SZE) clusters from surveys by Advanced ACTPol and Simons Observatory. A current topic of interest is mass estimation of individual clusters from weak and strong lensing using HST observations and from X-ray mass proxies using Swift XRT, Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. There will be an opportunity for independent research as well as collaboration with the SZE cluster teams on Advanced ACTPol and Simons Observatory on a very broad range of galaxy cluster science and cosmology projects.
The Rutgers Astrophysics group is actively engaged in observational, theoretical, and simulation-based research in cosmology, dark matter, gravitational lensing, galaxy clusters, galaxy formation and evolution, star formation, astrophysical turbulence, and supernovae and their remnants. Currently, Rutgers has a 10% share in the Southern African Large Telescope, and Rutgers astronomers participate in collaborations including Advanced ACTPol, HETDEX, Rubin Observatory LSST, and the Simons Observatory, as well as large projects with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, HST, JWST, MeerKAT, and planning for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
The Physics and Astronomy Department is located in Piscataway, NJ, as part of the flagship campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. The campus is just 45 minutes from New York City, and the area features several leading astrophysics departments and institutes, facilitating rich knowledge exchange and collaborations. New Jersey is a demographically diverse state, and our student body reflects the state's demographics.
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Candidates from traditionally under-represented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
The position, funded by a combination of Rutgers funds and NASA grants, is available immediately and so the start date of the position is flexible. The initial appointment is for two years with renewal for an additional year, if mutually agreeable and subject to the availability of funds. Excellence in research, observational or theoretical experience relevant to the research area mentioned above and the ability to successfully utilize new facilities are the prime criteria for consideration.
Interested candidates are asked to submit a cover letter, a CV including a list of publications and noting any equity and inclusion activities in which the candidate has been involved, and a brief (2-3 page) description of research experience and plans. All materials, including 3 letters of reference, should be submitted online via ROCS https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/241889
Complete applications, including letters, received by January 15, 2025, will receive full consideration and the position will remain open until filled.
Questions regarding this position can be addressed to Prof. John P. Hughes at jph@physics.rutgers.edu .
