Scientist/ Engineer (Emergency Response Technical Assistance Team)

CSS is now hiring a Scientist/Engineer for the Emergency Response Technical Assistance Team to support the Superfund Technical Assistance and Response Team (START) contract in Region 9. We provide competitive compensation and benefits packages for our employees.

The fieldwork for this position will occur primarily in EPA's Region 9, which includes the states of California, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and the Pacific Islands, and 148 Tribal Nations, as well as anywhere in the U.S., Canada, or internationally, in cases of significant incidents. The offices are located in Concord and Long Beach, California.

Responsibilities:



  • Perform as a member of the START emergency response team (ERT), providing the EPA client with accurate and pertinent scientific data according to agreed-upon methods, procedures, and techniques
  • Duties will include rotations as an "on-call" responder available 24-hrs a day for a week at a time
  • Willingness to participate in the Emergency Response On-Call Program and maintain preparedness for immediate mobilization while on-call.
  • Use level D-A PPE to make entries into potentially hazardous areas
  • Calibration and maintenance of a variety of multi-media monitoring and sampling equipment.
  • Document field activities and prepare daily and final reports for EPA client
  • In-field multimedia sampling
  • Assist with the writing of technical documents and plans
  • Provide timely task status reports and other required reports to Project Managers
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned


Qualifications



  • The position requires a BS in biology, chemistry, geology, environmental science, or engineering; an MS is helpful.
  • One to eight years of oil and hazardous materials/waste assessment and emergency response experience.
  • Ability to support oil and hazardous materials emergency response projects.
  • Familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS) 100-800.
  • Knowledge of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) preferred
  • Skills in Data Management and GIS
  • Preferred skills - use of field instrumentation. Some proficiency in the use of air monitoring and sampling equipment. Abilities include calibration, implementation in the field, and interpretation of results.
  • Technical writing skills, analysis of data, report preparation, and Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) required.
  • Proficient in the use of iPad or other Tablet technology.
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER and 8-hr refreshers, CPR/First Aid, and Blood-borne Pathogen training preferred.
  • Job requires bending, stooping, lifting at least 50 pounds, and working in inclement environments
  • Travel and obtaining a passport required
  • Must be eligible to work in the US and have a valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass a medical, physical, drug screen, and background check
