Job Summary

Cytology is the specialized branch of pathology in which licensed Cytologists examine cells microscopically to detect changes indicative of infection or malignancy. The senior cytologist is expected to examine gynecological, non-gynecological and fine needle aspiration specimens and evaluate for the presence of inflammation, organisms, precancerous and cancerous conditions. In addition, the senior cytologist supervises and trains Hospital Laboratory Technician as necessary/in the absence of the Cytology Lab Supervisor.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $59.33 - $73.86 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications

Senior Cytologist:

  • Completion of an ASCP Accredited Program in Cytotechnology
  • State of California Department of Health Services Licensure
  • Thin Prep Certifications
  • A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree
  • At least five years of experience as a Cytologist to qualify for senior cytologist

Cytologist:
  • ASCP certified or certification-eligible as cytologist within three months of hire
  • Certification-eligible candidates must pass the certification examination within three months of hire
  • Must obtain State of California Department of Health Services Licensure within three months of hire
  • Thin Prep Certification-eligible within one month of hire
  • A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree

Preferred Qualifications


  • More than two years of experience as a Cytologist and more than five years of experience as a Senior Cytologist
  • Experience in immediate evaluation of fine needle aspiration specimens of deep sites performed by radiologists
  • Ability to confidently communicate with clinicians and patients during fine needle aspiration biopsy procedures

License/Certification


  • ASCP certified or certification-eligible as cytologist within three months of hire
  • Certification-eligible candidates must pass the certification examination within three months of hire
  • Cytologist level must obtain State of California Department of Health Services Licensure within three months of hire
