Job Description - Power Production Specialist II

Starting pay for this position is $41.23 per hour.

Normal Minimum Requirements




  • Must currently be or have been a Power Production Specialist I at TEP or three (3) years equivalent operating and maintenance experience in a power production environment, or closely related field.



  • Successful completion of the identified qualification process up to and including the PeopleSoft Computer Based Training as well as courses associated with this position and all related testing



  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing



  • Must possess a valid up-to-date driver's license



  • Ability to perform basic math calculations



  • Must have physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, bend, stoop and lift for extended periods of time



  • Shift work required

There will be a three-part testing procedure required for this position. The first step is a timed Edison Electric Institute (EEI) aptitude test battery, or proof of full completion of the EEI testing,followed by a written technical skills test and a technical/behavioral based interview. Each step of the process must be passed in order to progress to the next step.

Technical/Behavioral Based Interview

The interview is a technical/behavioral based interview incorporating technical knowledge, skills, and abilities, with our Core Competencies. In this process we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents. We therefore have patterned the questions during the interview to solicit behavior patterns that indicate with high predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required and ascertain an understanding of the applicant's technical knowledge. This type of interview is different than those that you may have taken in the past.

Position Description:

The Power Production Specialist II is responsible for the proper, efficient and safe operation as well as minor tests, repairs, and maintenance of all plant equipment under his/her control in accordance with plant procedures and directions.

Essential Functions: (As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, these include the following responsibilities, minimum job knowledge, skills, and abilities. This is not necessarily an all-inclusive listing)

Position-Related Responsibilities:




  • Operates and troubleshoots all plant equipment as directed from locations including the than main control room



  • Perform minor maintenance and repair of plant equipment, piping and structures used in a steam generation plant and combustion generating equipment.



  • Monitor and verify relay operations



  • Perform switching orders as issued by system dispatcher or Control Room Operator; monitor switchyard; etc.



  • Assist in overhaul and modification of all plant equipment



  • Read, understand and work from sketches, blueprints, manuals, and handbooks



  • Takes appropriate action and makes proper decisions based on unit status



  • Qualified to perform all duties of lower classifications as required



  • Directs lower classifications as necessary



  • Remain current with plant design and operational changes



  • Share training and knowledge with other classifications



  • Understanding and proper use of clearance and safety procedures



  • Personnel safety



  • Safely operate mobile equipment used in Power Production as related to operations, maintenance, and repair



  • Successfully complete related training and study courses for promotion



  • Effectively interact with plant personnel, other Company employees, supervision and others



  • Effectively use plant Preventive Maintenance System



  • Performs emergency response duties as needed



  • Maintain a high level of awareness and responsibility for environmental considerations that impact them, theirs jobs and the Company to the level of their knowledge, training and experience



  • Progression to the 2 nd steprequires a satisfactory work record, completing assigned training and successfully passing job-related tests at the end of the 1 st step. Progression to the 3 rd step requires satisfactory work record, completing assigned training and successfully passing job-related tests at the end of the 2 nd step. Progression to the thereafter step requires a satisfactory work record, completing assigned training and successfully passing job-related tests at the end of the 3 rd step. Employees failing a test shall remain in the current step for a maximum of 90 days, at which time the tests will be administered again. Failure to progress to the next step may result in the employee being placed in corrective action as outlined in the UniSource Energy Employee Handbook.



  • General cleaning and housekeeping duties and all other duties as assigned



  • Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures




Knowledge, skills and abilities:




  • Must meet position requirements and demonstrate competency through the established testing procedure



  • Ability to effectively communicate



  • Working knowledge of plant systems and equipment



  • Knowledge of Labor Agreement



  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and ability to direct personnel as required



  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance procedures



  • Knowledge of heat rate and its direct effect on plant operation



  • Required to pass related tests to ascertain the ability to, and demonstrate competency in plant operations and performing minor maintenance activities



  • Under general supervision, perform minor maintenance and repair of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment used at Tucson Generating Station



  • Perform basic calculations for area, volume, rigging, etc



  • Knowledge of plant and Company safety manuals



  • Must demonstrate aptitude and familiarity with the principles of electricity, mechanics and physics, as related to the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the generation of electrical energy
