The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University is pleased to announce the opening of Assistant Director of the Office of Career Services - Student Career Services Associate II position.

The Opportunity:
The Assistant Director(s) will serve as part of a dedicated team of higher education professionals committed to the career success of our diverse student populations. They will provide career advising and coaching through one-on-one appointments, group advising, workshops and presentations. They will also provide leadership for the Office of Career Services' (OCS) various projects/priorities such as, overseeing our programmatic efforts in partnership with student leaders, other ILR staff/faculty, and the broader Cornell Career Services community; drive our marketing materials and digital presence; lead our winter break career exploration initiative (E.X.P.L.O.R.E.); manage the roll-out, collection, and analysis of the postgraduate/career outcomes survey and our summer survey.

Candidate Profile:

The incumbent will report to the Director of OCS and work collaboratively with two other assistant/associate directors, two administrative staff (operations team), and multiple student employees. In addition, this person will be part of the ILR Student Experience Team, focused on the student experience and wellbeing for ILR students, and has a student-centered approach, contributes to building a collaborative community based on trust, and values diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Career Advising and Coaching

  • Advise and/or coach students/recent graduates throughout the career development process in a range of career-related issues, including but not limited to: resume and cover letter-writing, interviewing, career planning/exploration/choice, job search/strategy, graduate school exploration, networking, and summer and postgraduate planning
  • Advise students in person, via phone or web-conferencing (Zoom), including students who are away from campus for study abroad, exchange programs, and semester-long credit internships
  • Incorporate knowledge of diverse populations when advising students to create a welcoming, inclusive space and address the needs of our various student populations and identities
  • Conduct practice interviews to help improve student interviewing skills
  • Connect with employers and alumni and guide students in networking with these constituents

Project Management

Lead multiple priorities/projects that meet the goals of OCS; delegate and hold others accountable for specific responsibilities. Assigned priorities could include two or more of the following and will be based on skills and interests of Assistant Director(s) hired and the business needs of the office:

Programming:

  • Develop a comprehensive plan of virtual and in-person events, passive programming (display cases/print materials) and social media takeovers; develop and facilitate career workshops for students, in person or via webcast or pre-recordings
  • Create and manage career-related forums involving employers, alumni, students, and faculty
  • Collaborate closely with office team, Cornell Career Services, ILR Student Experience Team and other ILR/Cornell faculty and staff to plan and implement new programmatic efforts, dependent on changing needs of students and employers

Winter Break Programs (E.X.P.L.O.R.E):

  • Solicit alumni and employers to sponsor shadowing opportunities or short-term projects over winter break for ILR students to learn more about career fields.
  • Market opportunities to students and facilitate lottery process for students to choose their activities.
  • Guide students to create opportunities in their geographic area if none are available through EXPLORE.

Career Outcomes Data:

  • Support roll-out, collection, and analysis of the postgrad and summer surveys for career outcomes information.
  • Craft communications to surveyed students to sustain high response rate, ensuring statistically sound data to help drive decisions within the office.
  • Review and update information, follow up with current students/graduates as needed.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to ensure accuracy of ILR data for broader audience use.

Office/Campus Leadership

  • Functionally supervise student employees for projects and initiatives under this person's purview.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and lead other staff in office priorities.
  • Participate and represent OCS in team-based committees and task groups. with members of Cornell Career Services and the ILR School staff and faculty members.
  • Contribute to the successful implementation and marketing of large-scale events.
  • Oversee different services and initiatives on behalf of OCS as needed (i.e.: Canvas course; career services onboarding for new students).

Professional Enhancement & Other Position-Related Responsibilities

  • Stay current with general job market trends and career fields of interest to ILR students.
  • Participate in relevant national and regional professional organizations and maintain contact with peer institutions to benchmark, implement new programs, and remain abreast of critical issue.
  • Be knowledgeable about the changing needs of the student population across ILR degree programs and adjust programs and services accordingly.
  • Participate in projects or other duties as assigned with occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification.
  • Completion of any university required compliance trainings.

What we need:

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Two-to-four years' experience in student advising in career services, student services, student counseling/development or related field required.
  • Proficiency in using technology, various programs and software, and social media platforms to move from transactional interactions to more relationship-based and transformational connections with students.
  • Strong presentation skills to develop and facilitate career-related workshops and events or engage small to large audiences of students, faculty, staff, alumni, or other constituents.
  • Strong organizational skills and experience in managing multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in college student personnel, student affairs, counseling, or related field.
  • Qualifications and/or certification in administering career assessment tools such as Strong, MBTI, StrengthsFinder (Clifton Strengths) or others preferred.
  • Experience with and knowledge of career services platforms, such as Handshake, is ideal.
  • Experience with Salesforce or CRM software a plus.
  • Experience in working with diverse populations.

This is a full-time, non-academic staff, benefits eligible opportunity located in Ithaca, NY, within the ILR School on the Cornell University campus. This is a student-facing role, requiring in-person presence during peak periods (early Fall and early Spring semesters). Outside of those times, the position offers flexibility with a hybrid schedule, including a minimum of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote during slower student traffic periods. The role can also be fully virtual during winter break and intermittently throughout the summer.
