The Institute for Community and Rural Health at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Program Coordinator.

About the Opportunity

The Rural Health Initiative Program Coordinator is a full-time position responsible for providing support to WVU Health Science students and schools, as well as other in-state schools participating in the Rural Health Initiative Program. The position also oversees all aspects of the WVU School of Medicine Rural Track Program. The position provides WVU representation of these integral relationships to meeting the mission of WVU and the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health.

What You'll Do

Rural Track Program:



  • Oversees and implements all aspects of the WVU School of Medicine Rural Track Program.
  • Develops and implements program curriculum (Immersions, Beyond the Books, Physician CME Courses etc.) Implementation includes program marketing, recruiting, scheduling of experiences, logistics and data collection for evaluation purposes.
  • Develops and manages the RHI Rural Track Budget.
  • Schedules and conducts students interviews with Program Directors
  • Collects and maintains a log of accepted students.
  • Corresponds with accepted students regarding curriculum requirements.
  • Schedules, coordinates and confirms rural clinical rotation assignments.
  • Develops and supervises coordination, implementation and marketing of yearly required student events that emphasize or support recruitment and retention of health professionals in rural and/or underserved areas, when funding is available.
  • Collaborates with Program Directors on submitting journal reviewed research projects for publication.
  • Prepares and edits marketing materials; prepares and writes articles, designs lay-out and oversees production and distribution of materials.
  • Attend state and national rural health conferences as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with WVU ICRH in planning WVU Rural Health Day, an interprofessional group of health sciences students who wish to pursue further knowledge about rural health care. Works with student leaders, to identify the line-up of activities, workshop topics and speakers each year. Communicates with school representatives and students regarding schedule of meetings and makes all preparation for the meetings.
  • Actively recruits faculty to serve as medical preceptors for students.
  • Assists faculty and preceptors with filing of appropriate paperwork to receive faculty appointment status at WVU.
  • Maintains frequent communication with school-based coordinators regarding rotation clinic schedules for medical students.
  • Manages and maintains status of affiliation agreements required for WVU clinical rotations.
  • Serves as a liaison between WVU School of Medicine Rural Track and the community to facilitate quality learning experiences for WVU SOM medical students.
  • Confirms and justifies all PCard transactions and expenditures with ICRH Director
  • Evaluates and communicates clinical issues and concerns in order to assure the successful integration of the program with all sites.


ICRH Rural Health Initiative:



  • Develops outreach, education and research activities for students in order to better serve rural communities.
  • Schedules medical student rotation requests, including the utilization of the TRACKER program for all WVU community-based rotations in the state.
  • Maintains frequent communication with school-based schedulers and coordinators regarding rotation scheduling and verification processes.
  • Reviews and approves rotation requests for health science rural rotations.
  • Actively recruits field faculty to serve as medical preceptors for students.
  • Assists faculty and preceptors with filing of appropriate paperwork to receive faculty appointments at WVU.
  • Report issues to ICRH leadership in a timely manner and ensure issues are rectified in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Manages affiliation agreements required with sites through the Marketplace system, including renewal of current agreements and creation of new agreements as needed.
  • Handles all TRACKER requests for alternative housing for WVU health science students in a timely manner.
  • Monitors alternative housing budget and provides reports on alternative housing as requested.
  • Conducts quarterly reviews of Rural Health Initiative Program funding expenditures and assists ICRH Director with budget and narrative reports.
  • Keeps abreast of clinical issues and concerns in order to assure the successful integration of the program with all sites.
  • Adjusts, refers and/or investigates complaints.
  • Conducts an annual review of the ICRH policy manual and assists ICRH Director with development of new policies around rural health initiative programming.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the following:

    • Managing a social/community service program


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Excellent verbal, listening, and written skills to communicate with students and administrative staff, school representatives, and state and federal officials.
  • Possess strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work without daily supervision, show considerable initiative, maintain the highest ethical behavioral, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Required to be detail oriented and able to bring an issue to focus and make decisions.
  • Ability to identify need(s) for new policies or creation of new policies to support program activities.
  • Ability to review budget documents for accuracy and analyze budgets to determine future spending.
  • Skilled at using current computer software, e-mail, fax, and other office equipment.
  • Maintains skills in, or knowledge of, professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
