Position Description

At the Anoka County Highway Department, it is our vision to enhance and protect life by providing safe roads and eliminating traffic congestion. The department has an immediate opening for a Traffic Sign Technician who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include operating county vehicles and equipment to install and maintain various types of traffic control devices such as signs, roadway striping, pavement messages (both painted and durable), detours, and work zone traffic control schemes on the County Highway System.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-siteposition. Interviews will occur as applications are received for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Pay & Benefits

  • Salary: $54,017 ($25.97 per hour).

  • 2024 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 30. $54,017 to $72,904 ($25.97 to $35.05 per hour).

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Highway building located at 1440 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, Andover MN 55304.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all-inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of the primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Traffic Sign Technician.

  • Operate sign vehicles to install and maintain various types of traffic control devices in a neat, orderly, and productive fashion. Install traffic control signage and devices.

  • Perform message painting and/or or follow truck vehicles as a part of the seasonal painting and grinding operations.

  • Fabricate signs and traffic control devices in accordance with Manual Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Standard Signs Manual, utilizing Flexi Sign Software, computerized sign cutters, solvent-based printers, and silk-screening equipment, and create correctly sized aluminum sign blanks using tools such as aluminum shears, radius cutters, and band saws.

  • Follow MUTCD and department standards and procedures when performing signage, painting, and grinding operations on the County Highway System, including using proper PPE and following safety procedures to ensure a safe and efficient work area.

  • Maintain sign vehicles through daily vehicle inspections, conducting basic routine maintenance such as checking oil and filling fluids, and notifying Fleet Services and/or supervisor when vehicles need more extensive service.

  • Perform daily cleaning and maintenance on all paint-spraying equipment.

  • Maintain 24-hour call-out capability to repair traffic control devices and for emergency snow and ice control operations, including snowplowing and salting, as scheduled by supervisors, and promptly and accurately complete all call-out forms, paperwork, and timecards as assigned.

  • Use a computerized system to call for underground locates prior to installing new signs.

  • May provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • High school diploma, or equivalent education.

  • Two years of full-time (2,080 annual hours) experience in roadway construction, highway maintenance, traffic engineering, or working with traffic control devices, paint sprayers, silk screening, or computerized sign-fabrication equipment

  • Must possess a valid Class D Minnesota Driver's License.

  • Possess a valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker and air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within one year of employment.

  • Successfully pass a criminal history and driver's license background checks.

  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Experience using basic hand tools and basic maintenance of vehicles

  • Experience working on high volume traffic worksites in a safe manner

  • Knowledge of current MUTCD standards and procedures

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Indoor and outdoor county work sites, including construction sites near high-speed/high-volume traffic, in all weather conditions

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness

  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds

  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties

  • Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills

  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity including repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment and materials

  • Regular lifting of 20-50 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs.

  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to Construction equipment depending on assignment

  • Construction equipment may include but is not limited to hand and power tools, heavy equipment, painting/striping equipment, hydraulic post pullers, shovels, rakes, air compressors, cement mixers, chain saws, picks, sanders, ice steamers, brush chippers, curbing machines, overhead personal lift vehicles, electronic test equipment, high temperature materials (asphalt, bituminous oil, and crack-filler), weather appropriate gear, and personal protective equipment

  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle

  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, fumes, airborne particles, prolonged vibration from machinery, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties

Union Representation

This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between Anoka County and the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local No. 49. Employees represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local No. 49 contribute three percent (3%) of the employee's wages to the International Union of Operating. This position is open to current Anoka County employee members of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 49 positions.
