A Product Development Intern (CTAG Summer Intern) will play a vital role in supporting the formulation of new products through benchtop work, managing tastings with stakeholders, assisting in pilot plant trials, conducting shelf life testing of trial samples, and coordinating the shipping of samples as required. The intern will need to be capable of self management, collaborate well with functional areas, and escalate issues. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the food industry while working alongside experienced professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with functional areas to manage workload requirements
  • Use good time management skills to manage activities and meet project timelines

Benchtop Formulation Work:

    • Assist in the development and optimization of product formulations at the benchtop level.
    • Prepare benchtop samples to evaluate ingredient functionality and product performance

Manage Tastings:

    • Organize tasting sessions with internal stakeholders to gather feedback on product formulations.
    • Collaborate with the team to refine product recipes based on sensory evaluations.

Assist with Pilot Plant Trials:

    • Support the execution of pilot plant trials, collaborating with Warehouse and Pilot Plant staff
    • Ensure material availability, Collect data, manage sampling schedule, monitor trial progress.

Manage Trial Stability Testing:

    • Conduct shelf life testing on trial samples to evaluate product stability and quality over time.
    • Analyze data and present results.

Sample Shipping:

    • Coordinate the shipping of samples to internal and external stakeholders as needed.
    • Ensure proper labeling and documentation for all samples sent.

Experience

  • Lab or pilot plant experience, knowledge of food chemistry and formulation methods a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

    • Laboratory Techniques:Familiarity with lab equipment and techniques, and comfortable around pilot plant.

    • Written Communication:Proficient in documenting procedures, results, and feedback clearly and accurately.

    • Attention to Detail:Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in formulation, testing, and documentation.

Basic Knowledge of Food Science:

    • Understanding of food ingredients, formulation principles, and shelf life testing methods is preferred.

    • Self-starter who is result-oriented, analytical, curious and who take initiative to get things done
    • Excellent communicators (both written and verbal) who can convey results simply and clearly
    • Ability to learn quickly, embrace change, and seek out help to be successful.
    • Proficient in Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint Skills, and can learn specialized systems such as Trial Management

Areas of Study/Majors

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field.

Additional Requirements

  • Preference should be given to someone who has worked in a pilot plant environment, or has experience in food formulation and laboratory.
