UIC is seeking an Assistant Director to join our Office of Community Collaboration (OCC) team. This role will work closely with OCC team members to foster relationships between OCC, UIC faculty/staff and community organizations emphasizing equitable partnerships and programs that serve to address systemic inequities and past institutional harms. This position will support the development, implementation, and evaluation of OCC and the neighborhood center initiative to advance authentic partnerships, social justice, and shared prosperity.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Development/Management and Evaluation:
  • Assess and monitor the effectiveness of current NCI 5 programs and services, identify programmatic gaps and service provision opportunities, work with community coordinators to develop and grow coordinated pathways amongst internal and external partners.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director and Project Manager to effectively manage the implementation of strategic actions derived from community feedback sessions

Operational and Administrative Oversight:
  • Support day-to-day operations of the neighborhood centers by ensuring adherence of compliance measures and completion of proper facility use documentation.

Management/Leadership and Supervision:
  • Supervise OCC staff in executing neighborhood center initiative strategic goals and report to Sr. Director. Collaborate with Sr. Director to hire new staff, graduate assistants and consultants.
  • Support Sr. Director with upholding the values, practices, and principles of the OCC

Communications and Marketing:
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director and other team members to ensure effective, consistent storytelling and messaging is communicated internally and externally regarding OCC's identity, mission, and the NCI.

Faculty engagement and Collaboration:
  • Support Faculty Fellow to promote OCC and facilitate collaborative opportunities for community-based research projects in the NCI neighborhoods.

Advocacy and Policy:
  • Collaborate with Sr. Director to develop strategic approaches to build and activate an advocacy agenda with community stakeholders and internal partners to address systemic barriers that impact prospective Black students and community organizations.
  • Fundraising and Project Management:
  • Support Sr. Director with identifying funding opportunities, work on funding proposals and provide oversight of any funded projects.

Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. A total of three (3) years demonstrated experience building community partnerships and best practices involving removing systemic barriers to higher education.


(Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity.
  • Experience working in higher education or with diverse populations in urban settings.
  • Familiarity with community-based participatory research methods.
  • Ability to build trust and foster inclusive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively as well as provide coaching and guidance to OCC team members
  • Strategic thinker with a collaborative, growth mindset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools.
  • Knowledge of systemic inequities and approaches to redress institutional harms.
  • Understanding of public relations and communications strategies and the ability to develop messaging aimed at enhancing the University's image and reputation in the community.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
