Job Purpose: We are seeking a highly motivated Principal Scientist, with strong in vivo skills, to join our bacterial In Vivo Team within the Infectious Disease (ID) Research group. Our ID team is part of Vaccines Research, one of the three therapeutic aligned Research teams here at GSK. The successful candidate will conduct in vivo experiments using animal models of bacterial infection and will be the in vivo representative and subject matter expert within a larger project team. This role involves designing and executing the in vivo strategy for the project, including performing studies independently, while working closely with cross-functional teams to advance our understanding of bacterial infections and develop novel therapeutic interventions.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

  • In Vivo Study Design and Execution: Design and execute in vivo studies to evaluate the efficacy and pharmacokinetics of potential therapeutic candidates for bacterial infections. Develop study protocols, conduct experiments, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards.
  • Animal Model Development: Develop and optimize animal models of bacterial infections to mimic human disease conditions. Select appropriate animal species, strains, and models to address specific research questions and therapeutic targets.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Perform data collection, analysis, and interpretation of in vivo study results. Utilize statistical methods and data visualization techniques to draw meaningful conclusions and contribute to the understanding of disease mechanisms and therapeutic interventions.
  • Project Representation: Serve as the project representative, providing scientific and strategic leadership in the field of in vivo research for bacterial infections. Contribute to the broader matrix team's development of innovative research strategies and drive scientific excellence within the team.
  • Collaboration and Cross-functional Support: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the discovery and development of novel therapies for bacterial infections. Provide scientific input and support to project teams, contribute to study design discussions, and participate in project meetings.
  • Laboratory Management and Compliance: Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and animal facilities in accordance with regulatory guidelines and GSK's safety standards. Ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations, ethical guidelines, and in accordance with IACUC standards and GSK's policies on the care and ethical treatment of animals.
  • Scientific Communication and Collaboration: Effectively communicate scientific findings, research progress, and strategic insights to team members, internal stakeholders, senior management, and external scientific communities.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • PhD with 1+ years' experience, MS in relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Immunology, Pharmacology) or related field with 5-7 years, or a BS in a relevant scientific discipline with 8-10 years or more experience in a research setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in conducting in vivo studies in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, preferably in the field of bacterial infections.
  • Experience designing and executing in vivo studies, including experience with animal models, dosing, sample collection, and data analysis.
  • Experience working with bacterial infections, including understanding of disease mechanisms, host-pathogen interactions, and therapeutic interventions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of scientific leadership, strategic thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proven track record to lead and deliver solutions for implementing GSK processes to conduct in vivo research in a regulated, safe, and well-executed environment.
