Job Summary

UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost (EVCP) is recruiting a Director of Communications to develop and lead the communications unit, which is responsible for the EVCP communications strategy, content creation, and dissemination. The scope of responsibility includes high-level internal and external communications, correspondence, newsletters, and websites. This role will be responsible for measurement and analytics to track the success and adjust the communications strategy. The role will work closely with colleagues within the EVCP Organization and across the UCSF enterprise, including leadership and staff partners in the academic, research, and clinical missions, as well as units such as communications, marketing, community and government relations, real estate and planning, legal, university development and alumni relations, office of diversity of outreach, enterprise emergency management and other divisions.

The communications unit is also responsible for Chancellor correspondence, which includes maintaining the Chancellor's website, reviewing, and editing content as needed, coordinating signatures and distribution.

This role will represent the EVCP office regarding campus communications and related campus-wide committees.

Candidates will be asked to demonstrate a track record of developing and implementing sensitive and complex communications strategies, providing strategic counsel at all levels of the organization, exercising discretion across a wide range of sensitive topics, and promoting collaborative approaches to problem-solving

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) leads both UCSF's robust research enterprise as well as its highly ranked academic programs in health professions and graduate education, clinical care delivery, and community service. The EVCP portfolio is comprised of four professional schools and the Graduate Division. The EVCP works in close collaboration with the Chancellor and his leadership team to develop and implement campus priorities and vision, maintain the University's status as an international leader in health sciences education and research, and oversee external partnerships representing UCSF's best interests across the University of California system, at the UC Office of the President, and beyond.

The EVCP Office works on matters related to academics, research, planning, and policy development, being a central point of leadership, coordination, and oversight of academic and research activities at UCSF. The EVCP office also has a critical role with respect to industry partnerships and business development in support of our research and educational mission, responsible for overseeing partnerships including focus, approach and implementation; and works closely with the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor for Development on fundraising and development in support of UCSF's goals. The EVCP Office is responsible for representing UCSF's interests at the UC-wide and Office of the President levels

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 6 Years of Directly related experience (in addition to degree)
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior leadership in a large and complex organization
  • Strong skills to create, develop and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • Strong knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Strong knowledge of copyediting and grammatical standards.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.
  • Strong skills to ensure production of high quality work within budget and time constraints.
  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and the most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively manage / supervise professional technical staff, including design concepts, various media, applications, etc.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Proficiency in Drupal content management, Constant Contact or other email marketing platforms, image editing software, and web analytics
  • Strong knowledge of UCSF or other academic medical institution, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices and infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
  • Strong knowledge of financial and personnel management, including understanding of management techniques, guiding principles, relevant laws, policies and best practices.
  • Strong management skills to select, train, evaluate, lead, direct, guide and motivate subordinate staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
