Position Summary

The Safety and Compliance Associate II serves and supports the University mission in relevant areas such as Biosafety, Chemical Laboratory Safety, Radiation Safety, and Animal Care and Use, Fire Safety, Environmental Affairs, Hazardous Materials, or Industrial Hygiene & Occupational Safety by:

* Assuming cross-disciplinary work responsibilities: working effectively as a member of an extensively cross-disciplinary team; readily accepting cross-training to gain competencies in one or more programmatic area(s) of safety and compliance; effectively communicating across programmatic lines.

* Working in potentially hazardous environments utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.

* With direct supervision, conducting comprehensive audits and inspections of laboratory and/or non-laboratory areas to identify unsafe conditions and practices, and making engineering, work practice, and administrative improvement recommendations.

* With direct supervision, conducting routine monitoring of employee exposure and investigating exposure incidents involving biological, chemical, radiological agents and/or physical hazards.

* Investigating and responding appropriately to concerns of unsafe workplace conditions.

* Participating in an incident response team, responding to releases and spills of hazardous chemicals, infectious agents, radioactive materials, and /or other environmental releases.

* Providing technical assistance and assisting with containment and clean-up of small and moderate size releases.

* Assisting in safety and compliance training programs.

* Identifying and implementing best practices and innovation in safety and compliance.

* Is available for consultation after normal work hours.

* Reporting survey findings, maintains regulatory required records, and effectively utilizes electronic safety, compliance, and research administration platforms.

* Supports other EHS programs and projects as directed by supervisors and senior management.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Ability to respond to critical safety and compliance situations appropriately in academic, research, and clinical settings. The ability to prepare clear, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations along with superior oral presentation and other communication skills. Have outstanding human relations and leadership skill and the ability to function in a team environment. Able to work independently on multiple simultaneous projects. Professional and/or technical certification for the applicable specialty is highly desirable.

Hazardous Waste Pickups:

With limited independence, performs Hazardous Waste pickups from approximately 1,850 locations across the Athens campus where waste is generated under direct direction from the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer. The Hazardous Waste pickup process includes the following tasks.

Using the online Chematix Hazardous Waste Management Module to review waste pickup requests. In consultation with the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer, categorize waste according to EPA regulatory codes and specific hazard class. Communicating with lab staff and conferring with the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer to ensure proper hazardous waste determination and characterization for safe and compliant packing and transport. Preparing proper documentation to transfer waste from generator point to Central Accumulation Area (CAA), including organizing paperwork and printing accurate Chematix waste tags. Organizing waste pickup routes based on designated hazardous waste zones in order to maintain compliance with federal and state hazardous waste regulations.

In consultation with the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer, preparing packing materials based on hazard class to insure that waste is segregated based on compatibility. Identifying and verifying pickup request information is consistent with waste that is present at the location. Under the direction of the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer, packing waste in proper containers based on hazard class for safe and compliant transfer to transport vehicle. Properly loading and securing waste in the transport vehicle. Utilizing compliant waste pickup routes to transfer waste to the CAA.

Transferring waste into the CAA from the transport vehicle. Checking waste into CAAs using the Chematix scanning barcode system in order to account for all waste and maintain an accurate inventory of CAA contents. In consultation with the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer, reconcile any discrepancies noted. Properly dating and placing waste in appropriate location within CAA.

Duties/Responsibilities

Central Accumulation Area Inspections: Under the general direction of the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer, conducts required weekly/monthly inspections of all CAA facilities including: checking waste accumulation start dates for compliance with regulatory time restraints; verifying accurate labeling, proper segregation, container integrity; and examining secondary containment vessels for indications of leakage. Inspections also include maintaining mandated quantity spill supplies, testing of emergency communication devices, inspections of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment.

Hazardous Waste Disposal Contractor Assistance:

Assists the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer in accompanying and assisting hazardous waste disposal contractors during waste removal from very small quantity generator locations, locations with unique disposal circumstances, and CAAs. This includes providing access to waste locations and observing transfer from waste locations to contractor vehicle to confirm safe practices and compliance. Coordinating and scheduling waste removal with lab personnel. Confirming EPA waste codes on hazardous waste manifest are consistent with UGA predetermined waste codes.

Lab Clean Out and Closure Assistance and Transfer of Chemical Inventory:

Under direct direction, assists Safety Officer or Senior Safety Officer with removing waste generated during lab clean-outs or lab closures. Under the direct direction of the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer Independently assists with the transport of chemical inventories to new chemical storage area during laboratory relocation.

Documentation and Record Keeping:

Independently reviews and associates correct manifest and waste container records (Chematix waste tags) to insure all waste is tracked from generation to final disposition. Files signed manifests and monitoring time restraints for receiving final signed manifest from the hazardous waste contractor. Records final closure dates on manifests and filing appropriately. Enters information into Chematix and scanning all documentation into Chematix and Hazardous Waste Tracking Database.

Under direct direction of the Safety and Compliance Specialist, Assistant Safety Officer, Safety Officer, or Senior Safety Officer, consolidates compatible liquid hazardous waste at the CAA.
