Position Summary
The position-holder will be responsible for managing the lab agenda within the Bennetzen lab as part of a multi-year and multi-institution research project. They will work in close collaboration with PhD students and postdocs involved in the project to fulfill project goals. Besides this, activities will mostly cover carrying out molecular bench work, maintaining and management lab supplies, and co-supervising undergraduate researchers also with other lab members. There will also be some field work carried out requiring travel to Arizona, which will cover approximately four work-weeks per year.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of, and bench work skills related to molecular lab activities (e.g., best practices in DNA extraction, PCR, sample management and lab health and safety).
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft and Google office suites).
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to write reports
  • Strong organizational capabilities and note-keeping
  • Experience in personnel management

Duties/Responsibilities
Design, direct and complete laboratory, greenhouse, and field-based research that will be used to publish papers in top Genetics and Plant Biology journals and conduct experiments that are designed by the researcher in conjunction with the PI and postdoctoral fellows in the lab.

Duties/Responsibilities
Supervising, training, and designing experiments / lab work conducted by undergraduate students in the lab. (There are currently three such students in the lab). Coordinating schedules, making sure that students have research assignments and that they understand the techniques to be used and the rationale for the experiments. This will all be carried out in collaboration with a postdoctoral fellow or the PI who has the primary administrative oversight of students (i.e., approving time worked in OneUSG connect).

Duties/Responsibilities
Carry out general lab maintenance activities integral to the research duties described above. This is inclusive of the preparation of buffers, agar plates and other reagents required to maintain lab activities. The position holder further will oversee lab inventory management and coordinate lab activities between other staff.

Participate in collaborative projects with colleagues within UGA and with collaborators at Northern Arizona University (in accordance with the US- DOE grant from which they are paid). These duties include frequent Zoom and email communication, sending information and research materials as needed (may include by mail or email), and working collaboratively on data analysis.
