Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree is required at the time of hire;
  • A minimum of three years of work experience in a college or university education abroad office
  • A minimum of two years of experience supervising the work of others;
  • An understanding of student confidentiality issues and academic protocol;
  • Significant experience with study abroad application software;
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage conflict and find creative solutions to challenges;
  • Ability to initiate, develop, and sustain strong positive working relationships with faculty and staff, program directors, department chairs, deans, and administrators across campus and at our partner institutions;
  • Proficiency in intercultural competence and cultural humility;
  • Solid written communication, oral communication, and interpersonal skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to work some evenings and/or weekends and travel abroad occasionally

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Education Abroad unit within the Office of International Programs is responsible for facilitating education abroad experiences for Appalachian State University (Appalachian) students. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of International Programs, the Associate Director of Education Abroad for Faculty-Led Programs provides management and oversight of faculty-led programs. This role works closely with the campus community to actively develop and support Appalachian State education abroad programs designed to provide students with academic and cultural experiences around the world.

The Associate Director of Education Abroad for Faculty-Led Programs is responsible for the full range of duties associated with faculty-led education abroad programs. Primary responsibilities include team leadership, program development, relationship management, and advising and mentoring. Tasks include but are not limited to:
Team Leadership

  • Supervising Faculty-Led Program Coordinators;
  • Supporting the professional development of Faculty-Led Program Coordinators;
  • Developing and overseeing strategies to eliminate barriers, increase student access, support, and preparation for education abroad opportunities;
  • Developing policies, procedures, standards, and contingency plans with the Executive Director to assure the health and safety of program participants and minimize liability issues for the university;
  • Serving on a rotation for on-call emergencies and crisis response for faculty-led programs;
  • Working with the Executive Director to evaluate existing policies, processes, and practices and implement data-informed, promising practices in education abroad.


Faculty-Led Program Development and Management

  • Serving as the primary initial contact for faculty who are interested in developing faculty-led study abroad programs;
  • Working with the Executive Director to design and deliver workshops for faculty leaders;
  • Collaborating with the Associate Director of Education Abroad for Exchange and Affiliate Programs in the design and delivery of pre-departure and re-entry workshops for students;
  • Promoting and marketing education abroad programs and increasing a broader range of study abroad participants;

Relationship Management

  • Communicating and coordinating with Appalachian's program provider colleagues;
  • Providing required data and information to relevant on-campus administrative offices to assure accurate billing and registration into Appalachian courses;
  • Responding to information requests from other university offices, organizations outside of the university, students, and parents when appropriate;
  • Contributing to the overall internationalization efforts at Appalachian and adding to the professional discourse in international education.

Advising and Mentoring

  • Serve as the Gilman Study Abroad Certifying Advisor;
  • Creating and overseeing office advising protocols in collaboration with the Associate Director of Education Abroad for Exchange and Affiliate Programs;
  • Advise students considering or participating in study abroad programs during office drop-in hours and/or through email.
