Note this position is Unionized and requires joining the Union organization. Salary Rate:
$28.68/hour Your future role As a Composite Mechanic, you will play a crucial role in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of diesel-powered vehicles. You will perform a variety of tasks, including engine overhauls, basic maintenance, and working on electrical systems. Your expertise will also extend to replacing parts such as the power assembly, cooling system mechanism, and braking systems, as well as retrofitting engines with emission control systems. We will look to you for:
- Ensuring compliance with all railroad safety rules, operations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
- Inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing malfunctions in engines, air brake systems, and locomotive components.
- Managing equipment work orders through our asset management database.
- Operating locomotives, passenger coaches, and prime movers as part of a team to move rail equipment.

We value dedication and a strong work ethic over extensive experience. That's why we don't expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we've outlined some minimum qualifications we believe will help you succeed in this position:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Valid Driver's License.
- 2 years of combined mechanical and/or electrical work experience in a relevant field (formal education may substitute for experience).
- Experience in reading and interpreting blueprints and circuit schematics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong analytical skills.
- Ability to read and understand safety instructions, manuals, and directives.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with supervisors and team members.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks accurately.
- Basic problem-solving skills and the ability to escalate issues as necessary.
Basic Competencies:
- Verbal comprehension (understanding oral and written communications, both general and technical).
- Communication skills (providing clear instructions and directions).
- Reasoning skills (problem-solving and troubleshooting).
- Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of electrical theory.
- Must be able to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation.
- Driving record must be free of any moving violations for alcohol or substance abuse within the previous 36 months.
- Basic proficiency with Windows software and Microsoft Office Suite applications (e.g., Outlook).
Physical Requirements:
- Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds rarely.
- Capability to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, balance, and climb regularly.
- Push, pull, grip, and carry on a regular basis.
- Walking long distances over uneven terrain.
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity.
- Exposure to elevated heat conditions on occasion.
Employment Conditions:
- Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries.
- Wear protective equipment such as hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses.
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shifts.
- Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations.
- Subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing as per regulations.
- Must pass all required assessments and a post-offer medical examination, including drug and alcohol testing.
- This position will be governed by a collective bargaining agreement, and membership is required.
- Active employees must complete one year in their current position or craft before applying for new positions.
