Job Summary

The Assistant Chief Pharmacy Officer, Home Infusion advises the Chief Pharmacy Officer on strategic planning and provides administrative leadership and direction within the pharmacy and nursing service lines to ensure achievement of the division's strategic plan, financial budgets, informatics support, operational efficiency (key performance indicators) and allocation management measurements for pharmacy and nursing services for UC Davis Health. This individual acts as a liaison between UCD Health leadership and Pharmacy Leaders to create a culture of open communication within a safe and supportive environment.

This position implements and maintains the financial and business goals and objectives which assures fiscally viable and optimal service delivery through the home infusion pharmacy locations which include Placer Center for Health and the (under construction) Shared Services Center (SSC). The projected service line revenue is ~$40M in 5 years with a gross profit of ~$5M annually serving patients throughout the state of California and providing TPN compounding services for the medical center.

Areas of direct management responsibilities include pharmacy operations (dispensing, sterile compounding, non-sterile supplies, distribution to patient homes and/or hospital), nursing operations (provision of nursing services in the home and in ambulatory infusion suites), revenue cycle including billing, charge capture, denials and denial recoupment, budgets preparation and analysis for operational service line, supply chain, and Joint Commission preparedness. This role ensures that all areas operate within the established policies, procedures and in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines.

The Assistant Chief Pharmacy Officer - Home Infusion works to plan, implement, and direct ongoing activities within the areas of responsibilities that optimizes revenue growth while practicing fiscal prudence and budgetary compliance; works closely with the Chief Pharmacy Officer to develop business and operating plans, ensures operational efficiency, productivity and effectiveness of services including the timely delivery of information.

Percentages of time allocated to functions are a guideline only. Individual assignments and time actually worked in each functional area may vary based on the department's operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • California pharmacy License or License eligible. Must obtain and provide CA licensure within six months of hire.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) or equivalent training/experience.
  • Prior Home Infusion management experience required
  • Competent on the ever-changing regulations around pharmacy and nursing practice by the Board of Pharmacy, Board of Nursing, CDPH, TJC, as well as the regulations regarding building codes for the spaces that are governed by OSHPD and state agencies.
  • Full understanding of USP 795, USP 797, USP 800 and how they integrate within the business lines.
  • Must have foundational managerial skills to lead and influence large groups of people in a dynamic inter-professional environment as well as be a high accountable and organized project manager for construction, operational, and informatics projects.
  • Must be an excellent communicator as well as have an excellent grasp of pharmacy financial management, including but not limited to home infusion reimbursement, 340B, charge capture, drug denial queues, workflows of the full pharmacy revenue cycle and clear understanding of opportunities for enhanced performance.

  • PGY 1 or HSPA PGY1/PGY2 residency or equivalent experience.

Department Overview

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.

Department Specific Job Scope

The manager is responsible for the entirety of the home infusion enterprise. That includes the current Placer Center for Health location, the future SSC, as well as the remote nursing team who visit patient homes across northern California.
The SSC location will host the largest clean room in the UC system which will be used to make products for home infusion as well as the hospital. Additionally, it will be home to infusion suites for patients to visit for infusion. The home infusion patient base will grow to serve all 33 counties in the UCDH catchment area. The home infusion department operates within 4 different Epic modules (hyperspace, compass rose, willow, and Dorothy) while also using a software program called Brightree for dispensing and billing. The billing functions are unique and require dedicated staff with duties separate from hospital billing. Home infusion staff are responsible for authorization of services, performance of services, billing for services, and follow-up on items billed both on the medical and pharmacy benefit. Revenue sources include drugs, nursing services, and per diems associated with home infusion.
