IT022 Associate Software Engineer
We have an opening on NASA's Space and Earth Science Data Analysis (SESDA) contract for an Associate Software Engineer supporting NASA's Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS) in the High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment under the Computational and Information Sciences and Technology Office (CISTO) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The position is initially part-time for an average of 20hours per week; the work can be performed fully remote although occasional in-person meetings and conference attendances could be required.
The successful applicant will:


  • Support science users in a High-Performance Computing environment, with a strong emphasis on climate models. Support will include helping scientists develop efficient vectorization techniques, migrating users to new OS and compiler environments, analyzing and improving user workflows, and debugging problems related to both code and systems issues.
  • Support code profiling efforts for performance improvements and evaluation of new technologies.
  • Support users in their efforts to use the HPC environment efficiently, including resource utilization, workflow, data management, code debugging, and visualization.
  • Support benchmarking of commonly used code suites for system monitoring and evaluation of new technologies.
  • Install, document, and validate existing researcher facing software packages

    • Install software packages and libraries for research groups
    • Provide support for installed software, including help with running, testing, and validation of software
    • Support the integration of installed libraries with one another, with other system components, and with user software
    • Provide domain-level software support to researchers, including migrating users to new OS and compiler environments, code profiling, resource utilization, and workflow and data management
    • Conduct assessment of software tools and packages, evaluating security, sustainability, etc.
    • Provide training on the use of systems, on software maintenance, and potentially on optimization


  • Perform researcher workflow analysis & support researchers with the redesign of those workflows.
  • Systems Environment Management: Work with system staff to maintain, enhance, and troubleshoot existing HPC computing environment, including the following:

    • System configuration management
    • Logs of system changes
    • Systems monitoring & alerting
    • Account management, including password management in some cases
    • Manage batch processing, scheduler configuration and policy implementation
    • Troubleshooting systems
    • Usage reporting




Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical field from an accredited college or university plus related experience
  • Demonstrate an understanding of climate science and climate models
  • Experience running jobs in a High Performance Computing science environment
  • Experience with parallel software development, MPI
  • Experience with a variety of compilers (e.g. Intel, PGI, gcc)
  • Experience with HPC queuing software, preferably SLURM
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Fortran, Java, Python, C, C++
  • Familiarity with Linux as a development platform
  • Experience with revision control software (e.g. Git, CVS, SVN)
  • Familiarity with Agile techniques and tools (Jira, Confluence)
  • Ability to work well on a team and independently
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • US Citizenship required for this position.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA.
