The expected hiring range for this position is:

$42.90-$45.06.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

About the Role:

Fermilab seeks an experienced Maintenance Mechanic IV to join the Infrastructure Services Directorate (ISD) team. Under direct supervision, performs journeyman level mechanical, preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance and repairs on a variety of mechanical systems and industrial equipment in a 24x7 maintenance operation. This is a collective bargaining agreement position.

What your day-to-day as a Maintenance Mechanic IV at Fermilab will look like:

  • Responds, troubleshoots, and completes service work orders and emergency equipment repair work by repairing, maintaining, servicing, and operating heating, cools, and ventilating equipment, Industrial Cooling Water (ICW) and Low Conductivity Water (LCW) systems, domestic water and sewer systems, pneumatic systems, pumps, air heat exchanges, plumbing and surface water systems.
  • Perform routine operational maintenance work orders on systems and equipment.
  • Perform programmed preventive and predictive maintenance via work orders on mechanical and HVAC systems.
  • Document work activities for utilization in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Recommend improvements in operations of maintenance and repairs of mechanical systems.
  • May be required to interpret correct temperature and pressure relationships (superheat and sub-cooling for AC/Refrigeration systems.
  • Attend all necessary ES&H and ISD training as required
  • With required Fermilab medical clearance and Laboratory training, and with line management authorization, performs occasional snow removal work using provided equipment. Occasional snow removal work includes clearing local pathways around buildings and equipment using approved snow removal equipment, including snow blowers and snow shovels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • High School Diploma with 5+ years of mechanic experience

Applicable Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical repair and safety procedures including plumbing, pipefitting, pump repairs, HVAC systems and rigging
  • Basic Microsoft Office (MS) experience with Word, Excel and Outlook

Physical Activity and Work Conditions:

  • Human Factors: Heavy lifting, heights, mental concentration, sitting, standing, tight work schedules, work outdoors
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds from ground level. Repetitive lifting of moderate weight.
  • Able to climb stairs and ladders and stand for up to 4-hours per day.
  • Able to legally operate cars and light trucks.
  • Physical Factors: Confined space, Cryogens, Dry Environment, Ionizing Radiation, Oxygen Deficiency Hazard Must be in good physical condition, able to perform sustained physical labor at a moderate level.
  • Must sit, stand, crawl, stoop, bend, climb, and twist to access equipment, including equipment accessed through maintenance holes 22" in diameter, 30" x 31" crawlspaces, and 17" x 20" attics.
  • Must work both indoors and outdoors under a variety of conditions (temperature extremes, rain, snow, and humidity).
  • Must work at heights over 4' using ladders, lifts and scaffolds within the rated capacities of such equipment (range between 300-350lbs.).
  • Must use available personnel protective equipment, including fall restraint and protection and nuisance level respirators.
  • Able to meet Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) and radiation worker requirements
  • Able to work with epoxies, solvents, glues and other chemicals
  • Able to become radiation certified.
  • Chemical Factors: Dust, Epoxies, Lead, Welding Personal Protection Equipment: Eye/Face/Foot/Hand Protection, Respirators
  • Biological Factors: Insects, Poisonous Plants

Work Arrangement:

Please note that the described work arrangement is subject to change based on business needs and is not guaranteed to be final.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
    • Able and willing to work occasional overtime on short notice in response to operational and emergency requirements.
