The Nursing Tech provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner.

Until the new graduate verifies that he/she has applied for a RN license, the individual will function on the nursing unit in the Care Partner role.

Once the new graduate validates with a letter from the Board of Nursing stating that he/she is eligible to take the RN-NCLEX exam, the individual becomes a RN Applicant and can then function in the role of a RN under supervision. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
Experience REQUIRED: N/A
Experience PREFERRED:
Acute care experience as a nursing assistant or aide experience
Education/training REQUIRED:
Completion of state recognized CNA program; or
Completion of first semester junior year in an accredited BSN program dependent upon school curriculum.
VCU/MCV BSN students - completion of sophomore year, Nursing 201, 202, 261.
Accredited Associate Degree and Diploma programs - completion of first year or a minimum of two semesters of basic nursing courses.
Specialty areas e.g. pediatrics, women`s health, psychiatry may require completion of a clinical rotation in that area; or
Completion of EMT program; or
Completion of medical assistant program
Education/training PREFERRED: N/A
Independent action(s) required:
Functions under direction of alicensed independent practitioner, manager and/or RN in providing patient care, emotional support, and problem solving; all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policy/procedure.
Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor: time/schedule changes; legal issues; directed care which deviates from standard; and identify educational resources to meet developmental needs.
Job Duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional position requirements:
Care Partners work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.
Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements and/or as needed.

Physical: Lifting 50-100 lbs.

Medical Surgical Care Unit is a 28-bed unit, all telemetry capable with 8-10 progressive care beds that is focused on caring for the adult medical and surgical patient population with a diversity of disease processes. The Medical Surgical Care Unit foster a culture that empowers new graduate and experienced nurses to learn, grow professionally, and provide exceptional care. The unit's mission is to foster collegial relationships between the entire inter-professional team such as the medical teams, care coordination, pastoral care, nutrition, environmental service, etc. to create a nurturing, caring, and positive environment for everyone. The medical surgical care unit achieved their 2nd Gold Beacon award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).
