JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Dr. Keith C. Cheng laboratory in the Penn State College of Medicine Department of Pathology, in Hershey, PA, is immediately seeking an engineering fellow to facilitate high-level research in the laboratory and at the National Synchrotron Laboratories. The engineer will enable the integration and full-time support of a custom X-ray imaging detector system to be installed and maintained in the lab.

The aspirational goal of the microCT imaging is to expand both the field-of-view and resolution scanning capabilities of synchrotron micro-CT and to improve the subsequent quantitative characterization of derived datasets through an instrumentation collaboration with national beamlines. As such, the primary duties of the engineer will revolve around three overarching responsibilities: integration of the detector system with the local infrastructure, troubleshooting and long-term support for the detector, and integration of our detectors at Argonne National Laboratory. Support with upkeeping successful collaborations, writing publications, digital data processing, CAD design of adapters and other components, stage control troubleshooting, image reconstruction, resolution quantification, and other beamline operational requirements will have to be performed as needed.

Initial integration and post-installation full-time support will be performed through the engineer, who will be stationed at the Argonne to operate, configure, and maintain the imaging system, and facilitate collaboration with Argonne staff and users. Integration of the system with existing Argonne hardware will include the installation of the detector alongside current optical systems, allowing the use of without tedious replacement of individual components. Likewise, image acquisition will be moved Argonne-side onto existing hardware used by currently installed cameras through the hutch labyrinth. In the absence of available hardware, an acquisition computer will be installed by the engineer alongside in-use equipment.

Individuals that are self-driven, highly motivated, and with excellent time management skills are encouraged to apply. Any applicant must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a highly diverse team. The ideal applicant will have excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, strong familiarity with scientific project execution, and previous experience with systems integration, synchrotron operation, optics research and development, and micro-computed tomography.

The engineer will work with Dr. Keith Cheng, the Principal Investigator, to optimize sample preparation (fixed, stained, and fixed in plastic) for nondestructive imaging, whose initial focus will be flies, water fleas, fish, multiple frog species, mouse, primate, human COVID-19 and cancer samples, and plants (focusing on Arabidopsis). Other members of the LBNL community are likely to suggest investigators interested in imaging their samples. When requests for imaging time exceed available time, the engineer will work with the Cheng lab to maximize scientific and social benefit to the best of our abilities and judgment.
