Job Summary:
The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is the state's public and environmental health laboratory. As part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the WSLH is committed to exploring new ideas which benefit the state, the nation and the world. This position supervises and performs routine newborn screening test for congenital conditions as part of Wisconsin's Newborn Screening Program, within the Endocrinology and Hemoglobinopathies unit. The primary testing technologies include, but not limited to, immunoreactions, electrophoresis, enzymatic assays, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Additional technologies used within the Newborn Screening (NBS) Laboratory include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), real-time and droplet digital PCR, Sanger and next generation sequencing. This position performs supervisory duties for up to six chemists. In conjunction with other professionals in the program, this position also communicates and reports screening test results. Duties in this position include the training of employees and visiting laboratory guests. This position contributes to the development of new analytical assays and serves as a subject matter technical expert and scientific leader to internal and external stakeholders. The position functions under general supervision and direction of the NBS Laboratory Manager/Directors. Responsibilities: Manages testing services for an analytical area, performs testing, manages testing services and reports results for chemical constituents in specimens and samples collected from humans, plants, animals, or other environmental matrices. Serves as a subject matter technical expert and scientific leader to internal and external stakeholders.

Education: Required Qualifications: Minimum of seven years of clinical laboratory high complexity clinical testing, required. Knowledge of biological and chemical laboratory safety practices required. Knowledge of and experience with meeting Laboratory Accreditation requirements required. Experience with CAP accreditation, preferred. Public health laboratory experience preferred. Experience performing molecular diagnostic testing, preferred.
