Essential Job Duties
We are seeking an Assistant Carpenter/Architectural Renovation Technician to join our team. This role involves assisting with various carpentry tasks, including drywall installation, ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetwork, and countertop installations. A basic understanding of renovation trades, tools, and safety standards is required, along with general knowledge of other trades. The ideal candidate will work within our trade shops and be an integral part of assisting with maintaining and managing over 2,240 acres within our campus. This role will grow into assisting within multiple facets of our trades. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with drywall installation, ceiling systems, flooring, cabinetwork, and countertop installations
  • Work on metal or wood stud wall systems

  • Perform trim work, hang doors, drill and set door hardware, and set windows
  • Remove walls, install partitions, and alter rooms or add to existing structures using hand and power tools
  • Use machines, tools, instruments, equipment, and materials associated with masonry, roof maintenance, downspout and gutter repair, and waterproofing below-grade
  • Perform accurate measurements and calibrations for carpentry work
  • Assess safety conditions regularly, identify potential hazards, and communicate them to supervisors

  • Implement accident prevention and corrective measures in work-related areas
  • Communicate with customers to improve service delivery based on their feedback, relaying information to Journey Level Carpenter or Supervisor

Other Responsibilities

  • This position is designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions, even if the University is operating on an alternate schedule. Responsibilities may include assisting with snow and ice removal under a supervisor's direction
  • Assist other trades as required

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to perform apprentice level work assisting carpenter technicians, with commercial buildings
  • Understand materials and safety procedures
  • Ability to climb ladders and lift up to 90 pounds occasionally, with or without accommodations
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in basic carpentry assisting in drywall, flooring, cabinetwork, and countertop installations
  • Possess a basic understanding of remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools, and equipment

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
