Position Summary

The Diversion Prevention Manager provides oversight and coordination of the medication diversion surveillance program at assigned clinical entities. The incumbent manages and analyzes transactional data and user trend reports to identify potential or actual diversion activities. The incumbent will also identify best practice opportunities to improve diversion data systems. The Diversion Prevention Manager performs and/or facilitates audits including, but not limited to, pharmacy, nursing, and anesthesia personnel. The role is responsible to facilitate investigations of suspected medication diversion incidents, including coordinating with HR, Pharmacy, MSOs, and additional clinical departments as required.

The Diversion Prevention Manager will ensure clinical entities are compliant with all applicable state and federal rules and regulations for controlled substance medication security, handling, and documentation. The role will make recommendations for optimization of diversion prevention systems (e.g., cameras, medication security solutions, surveillance and reporting software, and case management tools). The Diversion Prevention Manager will lead local, and system initiatives related to all areas of controlled substance handling including procurement and waste.

The Diversion Prevention Manager will support agenda and execution of the MHS Diversion Prevention Committee. This may include reporting on investigations, audit results, system improvements, etc.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

Program Development and Implementation:

Develop and implement a comprehensive diversion prevention program across all applicable healthcare facilities.

Establish policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices.

Design and execute training programs for staff on controlled substance management, diversion prevention, and opioid stewardship.

Collaborate with entity leaders involved in diversion prevention (i.e., pharmacy, nursing, human resources).

Regulatory Compliance:

Ensure all facilities comply with DEA, FDA, Board of Pharmacy, and other relevant regulatory bodies.

Stay current with changes in laws and regulations pertaining to controlled substances and opioid prescribing.

Diversion Prevention:

Develop and implement strategies to identify and prevent drug diversion.

Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to detect potential diversion activities.

Coordinate and/or conduct investigations of suspected diversion incidents and/or staff.

Education and Training:

Provide ongoing education and training to healthcare providers and staff on controlled substance management and opioid stewardship.

Develop educational materials and resources to support safe medication practices.

Deliver presentations and lead education sessions for various audiences, including senior leadership, clinical staff, and external stakeholders.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

Utilize data analytics to monitor controlled substance use, identify trends, and develop action plans.

Prepare regular reports for senior leadership on program outcomes, compliance status, and diversion incidents.

Collaboration and Leadership:

Work closely with facility leaders, pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure program success.

Serve as a subject matter expert and provide guidance on controlled substance and opioid-related issues.

Represent the organization at national and regional conferences and professional meetings.

Miscellaneous:

Other duties as assigned.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications.
