Performs professional nursing services for the assigned patient population. Responsible and accountable for the management and direction of the clinical operation and assigned personnel activities of the clinical staff of the department.
Education
  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (RN) required or
  • Master's degree in Health Care, Nursing Administration preferred
Experience
  • 1-2 years Progressively responsible experience in a hospital setting or physician practice, inclusive of 1 year of previous supervisory experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia required and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong financial management, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, and management skills.
  • Experience with the development of clinical protocols/pathways and managing physician-directed services necessary.
  • Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
  • Directs and manages the clinical nursing activities of the Pre-Anesthesia Department, inclusive of, but not limited to, participation in recruiting, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of the clinical staff including participation in progressive disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Assesses and revision for plan of care, as needed. May assist with nursing assessments of patients and families. Manages patient follow-up for both invasive and non-invasive surgical patients. Answers patients' clinical questions and determines best course of action for patients having symptoms or experiencing complications from procedures. Assists physician(s) with invasive and noninvasive procedures and examinations.
  • Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health's mission, vision, goals, objectives, and patient care philosophy.
  • Prepares and modifies assignment of leave schedules to meet patient care requirements. Recommends actions related to compensation rates, staff promotion, discipline, and termination. Anticipates and organizes opportunities for staff education and training.
  • Anticipates and organizes opportunities for staff education and training. Assesses the educational needs of patients related to their condition. Develops and/or implements a health education plan for each patient/family unit and for groups of patients.
  • Coordinates clinical staff activities and communicates recommendations for change to the Director of Operations for consideration and implementation. Participates in problem-solving activities to resolve areas of complication.
  • Manages designated equipment and supplies with a budget to support clinical needs of the division including inventory, utilization, and distribution. Consult with Director of Operations regarding changing trends and practice issues affecting equipment and supplies. Serves as liaison to Department of Surgery, other departments, divisions, and hospital. Estimates preliminary capital budget requests for division.
  • Communicates and collaborates with personnel in other Hospital and university Departments, outside agencies and vendors regarding clinical operations of the division. Ensures that all services meet, and are in compliance with, licensure, accreditation, and CLIA JCAHO standards.
  • Anesthesiology: Identifies QA/QI indicators for service and participates in data collection and analysis related to indicators. Identifies and reinforces issues related to modification in practice and standards of care. Incorporates practice updates into manuals. Maintains policy and procedures manuals per MMG-Anesthesiology standards.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
  • Performs professional nursing service in outpatient ambulatory care clinical settings including patient assessment, assists in procedures, patient teaching and ongoing care.
  • Conducts interactions with patients and families in person and by telephone, including, but not limited to, all aspects of maintaining and implementing medical regimen. Coordinates health care team activities.
