Job Description

The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical campus is seeking applicants for a part time Senior Research Associate. The successful candidate will lead, support, and work on design and research projects focused on medical devices, mechanical engineering, medical device testing, and manufacturing. The candidate is also expected to lead and help with writing research grants, develop industry-academia partnerships with local and national industry, and mentor lab personnel. Our laboratory is focused on designing and building medical technologies that can be translated rapidly into human / clinical use in an efficient manner.

Senior Research Associate

What you will do:




  • To lead, support, and work on medical device design and testing efforts across multiple clinical disciplines including gastrointestinal, emergency / combat medicine, cardiovascular, and surgery.



  • To lead mechanical testing, mechanical engineering, and device manufacturing for the various projects in the Shandas Innovation Lab, ensuring work continues to progress toward milestones, that the projects are on budget and are appropriately resourced.



  • Help recruit and mentor lab personnel including undergraduate and graduate students, professional research personnel, and others.



  • Implement quality, manufacturing, and design control / design assurance processes on all design projects. Ensure documentation is up to date and meeting all required standards.



  • Help with and write grants to expand the lab's funding in the medical device and related areas.



  • Pitch product ideas to a variety of stakeholders and funding agencies.



  • Ensure lab supplies and equipment are up to date and meeting regulatory standards; order replacements as needed.




Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)




  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline


  • 10 years experience in medical device design, specifically manufacturing and testing of medical devices


Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)




  • Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (passed)



  • Certification in SolidWorks




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities




  • Knowledge of FDA regulatory issues including ISO 13485, CFR 821 part 21, ISO 109993, and other standards and regulations specific to development and testing of medical devices.



  • Ability to create and update Product Requirements Documents, Verification and Validation testing protocols, design history files, and quality system documents.



  • Understanding of continuous improvement practices such as Six Sigma or related standards.



  • Know how to create Change Orders and review processes for CAPA




Conditions of Employment



  • This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $35,000 - $45,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
