Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and organized individual to contribute to basic, animal, and translational research on lung injury and fibrosis within the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, and Critical Care Medicine. The candidate will join a collaborative and supportive team that includes undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, scientists, clinical research coordinators, and faculty. They will play an active role in advancing research projects while supporting the success of students, interns, and fellow lab members. The candidate should work well in a team, performing supervised duties on several projects under the leadership of two Principal Investigators and in close collaboration with staff and trainees in their laboratories. The successful candidate will perform complex procedures and analyses using basic science and animal models, requiring precision, strong record-keeping, data management, and the ability to optimize and troubleshoot protocols. The candidate will receive necessary training in all required techniques and will be encouraged to seek advice from colleagues and supervisors as they grow into independence. They will have the opportunity to prepare experimental results for presentation and publication. In addition, the candidate will be tasked with lab maintenance, ordering supplies, and ensuring that the lab is fully stocked.

This position will primarily support the Bernau and Sandbo laboratories.


Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 40% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 25% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 10% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
Degree in Molecular Biology or closely related field in the biological sciences preferred.


Qualifications:

Required:
- Minimum of 2 years laboratory research experience. Significant trainee or research intern experience may be considered.
- Experience with tissue culture and general microbiology techniques (Protein assays, DNA assays, RNA assays)
- Experience compiling data using spreadsheets, graphs, and basic statistics

Preferred:
- Experience working with human specimens (e.g. organ processing, tissue culture)
- Experience working with rodents
- Experience compiling and analyzing data using spreadsheets, graphs, and basic statistical methods
- Experience with imaging techniques and/or RNA sequencing would be a plus
- Personal initiative, independence, and enthusiasm for laboratory research
- Excellent communication skills, flexibility, and ability to work in a multi-PI team environment
- Experience with ELISA, western blotting, immunoprecipation, immunocytochemistry and microscopy, BCA; PCR, cloning, transfection; RT-qPCR, siRNA


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 90% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

The starting salary for the position is $54,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Additional Information:

This position requires meticulous attention to detail and a willingness to work with rodents. The ideal candidate should be proactive, eager to learn new skills quickly, capable of working independently, and able to train others. Enthusiasm for laboratory research is essential.
